I watched "Security Now" episode 832 titled "Microsoft’s Culpable Negligence" where Steve Gibson (who coined the term spyware) just rips Microsoft a new one for ignoring security issues.

Funny this thread somehow came up. How time has passed since then.
I'm happy to report I made the change to a Mac and my music production experience has been a lot smoother (knock on wood). It's not to say I don't have issues - I run into the occasional hang/reboot/ "iLok is missing XYZ" on resuming from sleep. But for the most part it's a lot less hair pulling and lot more music-making. Yay.
Wish I had moved a long time ago. Like, last decade. I feel sorry for my younger self for needlessly putting myself through years of frustration.
This isn't a PC vs. Mac thread by any means, but it's more of a DAW setup thread. And, by far, my current setup beats out anything I've used. Cubase was a dream when it worked right, but my PC made it a struggle. I still miss many Cubase-y things in Logic but meh it's better than the alternative.
Plus, my Mac is whisper quiet (except when rendering the project) whereas my PC would be annoyingly loud.

What were the specs of your PC, and what are the specs of your Mac? And you were running Windows 7 when you started the topic which means you were using an already outdated PC back then. What macOS version are you running now? By the time your Mac will reach the age your PC had, we will see you again complaining (if not sooner).keyman_sam wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 6:35 am Funny this thread somehow came up. I tried Windows 11 ,then my EMU 1212m died.....
Luckily the fallback to Windows 10 woke up the ole girl.
Just wondering how many have tried Windows 11 and getting their audio interfaces working?

Ofc I realize I'm comparing 2 machines that are ages apart (2011 vs 2018). Apart from the processor (Core i7 older gen vs. newer gen) the specs were similar (32 GB ram, SSDs, etc).fmr wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 9:14 amWhat were the specs of your PC, and what are the specs of your Mac? My PC was a huge tower whereas my Mac mini is barely noticeable. Just the fact that such a tiny little thing can outperform my PC tower was impressive. "You telling me I can do all the things I did before AND MORE but at a fraction of the size? What's the catch?" I thought. Then again I have a Mac tower from 2008 and it still looks/runs well. Just opening the tray made me realize how beautifully put together the machine was. The PC will easily outperform it, but the experience is smoother with a Mac and it's these little details that seem to make the difference. I resisted the Mac hype all my life, till I actually used one and hit myself for not making the switch sooner.
And there we go gentlemen, yet another Mac vs. PC thread.

I will not start that war myself, but you are comparing apples and oranges here, and apread wrong information that may influence others erroneously.keyman_sam wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 2:05 pmOfc I realize I'm comparing 2 machines that are ages apart (2011 vs 2018). You made an option, and it's OK: I'm glad you feel well with it. But don't blame an old PC for not performing. The CPU is completely different. The RAM will not be the same, almost for certain (being 32 GB is not enough - thetre will be a difference in performance in different RAM generations). The same may be said of the SSD, and the fact that one is an SSD that is running through SATA, while the other will most probably be one M slot SSD also makes a huge difference.
And are you comparing the size of the chassis? "What's the catch?" Really?

The EMU 1212m is not supported anymore, AFAIK. Even installing it under Windows 10 needs some kind of hacking: viewtopic.php?t=529349Smasha wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 11:58 am I tried Windows 11 ,then my EMU 1212m died.....

Maybe you could try this hacking under Windows 11.

Yes,that's how I got my card to work in Windows 10 also.fmr wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 10:19 pmThe EMU 1212m is not supported anymore, AFAIK. Did not work in Windows 11 though after a few tries.
I think the closest thing to her but without the Patchmix software is the Audient id 14 mk2.
My mobo is an old b350 Tomahawk but I have bought a gen2x 4 pci e to usb c,usb 3.0 adaptor card for future upgrading.

I have never understood this. My experience has always been 100% the opposite. I find the limitations of working with a Mac absolutely infuriating at times, whereas my PCs have always basically just worked, all the way back to my Windows 98 days. It makes me feel like I must either be a f**king genius (unlikely) or the luckiest man on Earth (even less likely).keyman_sam wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 6:35 amI'm happy to report I made the change to a Mac and my music production experience has been a lot smoother (knock on wood). I have absolutely no intention of trying Windows 11. It looks like a bucket of steaming horse shit that will completely f**k over my carefully cultivated workflow.Smasha wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 11:58 amJust wondering how many have tried Windows 11 and getting their audio interfaces working?
This is a HUGE point, not to be underestimated. I recently went from a 6th Gen Core i7 (2016) to a 10th Gen Core i7 (2020) with otherwise similar specs - 16GB RAM, SSD - and I am staggered at the difference. I thought it might be twice as powerful/fast, but it feels more like four times, maybe even more. Things that brought the old machine to it's knees, like trying to use bx_oberhausen and ARP Odyssey in the same song, don't even reach 50% now. And when you aren't taxing your system all the time, you rarely have any problems.fmr wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 10:12 pmBut don't blame an old PC for not performing. The CPU is completely different. So yeah - most, if not all, the gains you experienced are very likely down to the fact you bought a new computer, not that you switched OSes.
No, you can't. Water-resistance is made for cold water (ambient temperature). A hot shower will see the metals expanding in ways they weren't designed or tested for. Hot water also has less surface tension, so shower water will penetrate further, more easily. That said, I'd use my laptop in the shower if I felt like it. I wouldn't run the shower over it but I'd happily use it while I was standing in the shower. A few splashes won't worry it, water-resistant or not.Michael L wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 10:28 pmYou can shower with an iPhone or iPad; they are water resistant

No. I preferred Vista to Win7 and Win8 was head and shoulders above both. Everyone seems to love Win7 but to me it is the worst version of Windows I ever used (I skipped ME). It didn't fix a single problem from Vista and it created new ones. It was basically just a cosmetic job, it didn't address any of the core issues Vista had. It wasn't even a service pack level upgrade. Vista SP1 was a better OS.
I still have Windows 8 on my 8" tablet. It doesn't look as slick as Win10 but I prefer the way it works. It is infinitely more customisable and you can actually use it on a touchscreen device, unlike Win10. In every other respect, though, Win10 is improved on what Win8 started, even though they have dumbed it down a bit. Now Win11 looks set to continue down that road, making it even dumber and less usable.
