Realistic electric guitar 'feedback' effect?

I'm getting into recording guitar direct into my USB interface and using amp sims rather than warming up my valve amps and annoying the neighbours (and the wife :lol:). It's convenient during lockdown. But one thing I can't emulate is the natural pickup/speaker feedback when an electric guitar amp is overdriven loud.

I've thought about automating individual EQ's on harmonics to make them resonant - basically emulating the science - but surely there's an easier way?

I noticed Softube have an 'Acoustic Feedback' plugin... is it good - and is there any other plugin out there that does this?

Here's another one, but haven't tested it yet

This is all YMMV depending in what you want put of feedback.

The softube one isn't very good IMO. It works, but is virtually impossible to use convincingly in a mix.

The bluecat one is much better, but you need to work with it to use convincingly.

Other options are just making some recordings to use as samples, or downloading some from freesound.

I think one of the ohmforce ones can do it too, but I don't know which...

Thanks for your, errr, feedback :D

Yeah the Softube seems a bit limited and is getting old now. The Bluecat definitely has a lot more control.

Seems like the Softube and Bluecat plugins are the only ones dedicated to this purpose - guess it's pretty niche.

Try using a filter plug-in which will self-oscillate (I find the Plug & Mix 'Moogy Filter' to be particularly good for this). Tune it and automate the amount mixed in (before the amp!) for the feedback emulation. You'll probably need to also record a bit on 100% for any sections where you just want the feedback on its own.

Uh.... the Softube Feedback is the one I use and it's great. BlueCat sounds unrealistic and I could never get it to sound convincing. Not sure where your ears are or what you are doing...

Here's an example. It's a long track. If you go to 3:20 this section uses a sampled guitar through the Softube acoustic feedback effect

I've done fine with blue cat. Some of the controls are counter intuitive. once it gets dialed in it works very nicely. I didn't bother trying much else. Using actual acoustic feedback works well too.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

This might be my favourite song I've heard from you :love: Lush Eastern vibe.

I've come across this before. The best solution for me was to just get a sample (from Free Sound Project or somewhere) of a guitar amp feeding back, then put that through the amp sim you're playing through.

Thanks! I am pretty happy with how it turned out.

Also I made a typo on the time for the section with Softube Acoustic Feedback: its at 3:20

A really good way to do it as well is using an ebow to record the notes you want the feedback to have. TC Aeon (same thing..) is £29 still at G4M in the UK at the moment- cheaper than tons of plug-ins, if you're a guitarist, no reason not to!. Great thing to have anyway;

Quick and dirty (with all due apologies to James Williamson for the riff :hihi: ) demo of a bit of artificial feedback;

speakin' of eBow, jacking the effects on SonicCouture Xbow guitars (gots more than one distortion type) got me a sound everybody assumed was from feedback.

the Softube is limited but when people tell you about 'convincingly in a mix' they're just speaking for themselves, dose o' salt time

Forgot about that one! Reminds me, been meaning to do some sampling of my TC Aeon for a bit, then making a basic Kontakt instrument, probably one set with, and one without vibrato.
