"The software essentially functions as AI in that it is just that, infinite velocities to one note. You don't run into that velocity bump that can be found in samples. Take a Piano library, for instance, it doesn't matter how many samples of different velocities of one note you record, there will still be that space in-between the samples that is missing. A Piano in Soundpaint is exactly like a real Piano in that there are no sampled velocities on a Piano, it just works. The infinite velocities in Soundpaint makes it so a Piano library plays like a real Piano. The response is more realistic. We developed a new sound format specifically for Soundpaint so we could do this. Soundpaint is meant to sound realistic like an analog instrument, but can also be made as synthetic sounding as you want."

I was expecting something that generated digital 3D graphics based upon spectral synthesis, which could then be transformed into 3D rendered objects which would react to how you played an instrument.

What's been shown so far are 3D objects animated and rendered in Cinema 4D. Cinema 4D has what is called Sound Effector, that uses sound to affect the movement of objects. Oddly, it's not being used in these video clips, so I don't see the point as pretty as the CGI is.

If I had spent 8 years on something, I'd have done enough to be able to show a screenshot of it, which is more useful than random 3D animated videos which shows nothing of it. I've made full, highly complex 3D promo videos myself for GUI designs I've created over the years, and integrated the product into it... it's weird to me to not see something like that.

....

I don't get the velocity aspect of this, because the higher the velocity you hit something, the louder the sound. Having more layers of something doesn't necessary mean that it's going to sound better either, more often than not, it leads to distortion the harder something is hit. Drop a bowling ball on a piano key from a great height, it will break the keys. Real grand pianos obviously don't use samples, they use strings and hammers of which the sound reverberates in and around the room (or outside environment) of which it's struck.

There are limits in which a piano player can hit the keys naturally as well, that's no different from having velocity limits or in the case of synthesizers having a sensitivity level of 127. That's not going to change regardless of the software used. Some plugins like 'Open Air' in Presonus Studio One is used to create the characteristics of a real room environment so again if you aim to create an authentic sound then you'll need to take that into consideration as well and beyond that 3D immersive environments for authentic simulations of sound.

Anyway, I'm still wondering what's been created here.

Hello :)
Sorry we haven't been as engaging as you like. What questions do you have for us?
When will the beta testers email address be active?
It appears quite unprofessional to suggest users contact a given email but literally everyone got a "no user at this domain" message in return. How can that have been so badly organised?

Aside from that, it does sound like it could be interesting. I'm going to guess it uses granular and spectral resynthesis to deconstruct and reconstruct the samples.
There were some issues with Google. Please send your emails to sbeta@8dio.com Our apologies for the confusion.

It's not the first time a developer here has had trouble with Google emails. S#@t happens. I don't think one email problem indicates poor organization, necessarily. Cut them some slack. 8dio has a great track record, as far as I can see.
Sorry, but I don't agree. Setting up emails is par-for-the-course for running companies these days. You buy the domain, define the email users, done. It's been done a zillion times in the past 30 years. What has google got to do with it?

As well as not explaining here why the email didn't work, they've had a week to sort it out and haven't said "hey guys, the beta address is sorted, if you want to take part, send us your email again!".. that just reeks of not-very-good-public-relations.

The longer this goes on, despite the teasers (which as interesting as they sound, tend to be driven by the expensive graphics) and as interested as I am in phrases like 'infinite-velocity', the less they speak up here and explain themselves, the less interested in them I become. If this is how they're dealing with a release teaser, trying to pique the public's interested, I can't imagine what the customer support is like. Yes, I'm extrapolating quite a lot from 9 posts in one thread, but after so long, you get a feel for how these companies and people are going to treat you, as a customer.

This company has spent 8 years developing whatever crazy maths and models to realise this idea.. investing, researching, testing, sleeping, and they will reeeeally want to get some of that (money) back, so the campaign to get people on board will be carefully designed (only the finest examples in videos, no public technical detail (though that could change)) and I think, with the risk they're taking, they might have been a little more talkative to the people who are their potential customers.

I can't fathom why they've been so uncommunicative. But without a strong public-facing voice, my interest is waning.

It's funny, I also feel like I remember another product came out in the past few years which claimed a similar function to 'infinite velocity'. People complained "why? midi has only 128 steps", and then promptly forgot about OSC. Also, doesn't MIDI2 have finer granularity in that regard?

A simple literal description in plain English of what Soundpaint actually is would be cool.
Again, it can be a little tricky to describe because nothing currently exists that offers a really good comparison. We will be releasing more information :)

Essentially, it is an incredibly fast sound engine that has infinite velocities within the 127 MIDI velocities. This allows the instrument to respond closer how to an analog/acoustic instrument would. We created a brand new sound file format that allows the engine to do this. The sound is processed in Real-time. This allows notes to be stretched without receiving artifacts or the sample from being slowed or accelerated when you play note higher or lower from the original sample. The libraries sound hyper-realistic because of the way the engine is set up, but there are also a plethora of effects that allow you to make any library sound as synthetic as you want.

Hopefully this helps to clarify a little more. More information is coming :)

In your original post you mentioned this:

"Write us at beta@soundpaint.com if you are interested in joining the Soundpaint BETA and tell us a bit about your past experience with BETA testing software instruments."

I emailed to that address and mentioned some of my beta testing experience, but then I just received that newsletter and nothing about beta testing.

Can't wait to try it!

Post

From Troels Folmann (one of our founders):
"So one thing that is important for us to underline is that we love Kontakt and will continue to develop and support it. 8Dio will remain focused on Kontakt and we have over a dozen new instruments ready for it.

However, we also need to continue to evolve and that does require new technologies. To me a part of that journey is to create technology that brings me back to the music - rather than take me out of it. Wait till you try a piano or an old vintage analog in Soundpaint.

Another thing that is important to me is speed. I can load over 100 instances of Soundpaint with full instruments in less than 5 seconds and that means less time wasted.

The entire mantra of the engine is to limit the amount of time having to noodle around and do engineering. It’s just fast, furious, fun - whereas Kontakt is this beautiful, heavy, monolith of a sampler.

It is also worth considering that Kontakt is 20 years old, which is remarkable for most software platforms. It has stood the test of time and always been robust compared to others. We have over 300 deep-sampled instruments for it and over 16TB of Kontakt data.

Soundpaint in comparison is my world anno 2021. Scalable UI. Scalable font sizes. Intelligent library system where all instruments live together and can be found in just a few seconds. Infinite dynamics layers. Analog modeled effects and so forth. Modular UI where you decide how you want your layout. And most importantly a layout designed with composition in mind.

The two platforms compliment each other and without Kontakt - we would’ve never been able to do Soundpaint, which is forever and most humbly, present in our mind too."

Until now we have seen nice sounding teasers which tell exactly zero…
I have some questions. The first I have to ask always
1. does it support MPE?
2. what is the basics of the tool. Samples or synthesis?
3. is it meant as a platform to sell sounds or as tool to make sounds?
As there is no information yet at all I can‘t tell if I am interested at all…

I think questions two and three were answered in the first post. To my understanding it is a programming instrument that uses samples as a basis, but using its own special sample format. What isn't clear yet is if it will be capable of converting regular samples into that format to be used.

Regarding MPE, there is a lot of much more improtant things that should concern them right now, don't you think? This isn't clearly something to be "played", nor a performance tool but rather a sound design tool, so I don't think MPE is a priority. CPU optimization and system compatibility, progranability and a good GUI should be the most important concerns, right now.
