Must have been around 1990 my cousin had tickets for ZZ-Top playing a stadium in Köln. That was the closest their tour got to us. I had a car so we drove there, he had booked a cheap hotel in advance.
We're in the stadium in the afternoon, the supporting act starts. I don't recall exactly, think it was a local rock group called white angels or so. They play a set. What's next? ZZ-Top? No, not yet. John Farnham is on stage next. He plays a set. ZZ-Top is on next, right? Wrong! Bryan Adams is next. All support acts had a decent stage, 20 meters wide, 10 meters deep. ZZ-Top is on next! Off go the black curtains and the stage is now 50 meters wide & 50 meters deep. They built a car demolition facility on stage. Conveyer belts, bumper cars, laser beams, sexy dancers, it was the biggest show I had ever seen!

About 5 years later ZZ-Top was touring and now got to my own town. The venue was small (2000 visitors) and it was just them three on stage with a simple spotlight and a stack of amps. One of the smallest shows...

Never seen a bigger contrast than that, never seen a band before that could pull that off.

About 5 years ago a friend was playing some really good rock music. I thought it was Pat Travers Band, but no that was some older work by ZZ-Top.

Thank you, Dusty. We enjoyed it very much, and will continue to enjoy your records.
and in the middle of the show from the light rigging a stage crew fell and was hanging by his neck? I havent seen them this century but that was a staple at their shows, a dummy would fall

Spectacular, bizarre. I would have remembered.
But I don't. Was I too stoned, or didn't they do that stunt in Europe?

They did lift drummer Beard by an electromagnet and dumped him in the car crasher. That was a dummy, not mr Beard himself. Does that qualify?

maybe that was the upgraded show :hihi: tbh the one thing I didnt like about seeing them live was how short their show was...45 minutes including encore...one time the acid was just peaking and house lights came on
