C5 -> C#5 -> D5 -> D#5 -> E5 -> F5 -> F#5 -> G5 -> G#5 -> A5 -> A#5 -> B
so if i hit D#5 for example i write D#5?
Not necessarily! First, you know that D#5 and Eb5 is the same note, right? (in equal temperament that we typically work with)

Then, which one do you feel more natural when you're working on a C Minor scale?

C5, D5, D#5, F5, G5, G#5, A#5, C6

or

C5, D5, Eb5, F5, G5, Ab5, Bb5, C6 ?

And, which one do you feel more natural when you're trying to spell a Cm chord? C5, D#5, G5; or C5, Eb5, G5?

(btw, maybe when you set up the key signature to C Minor, your DAW will change the display of letters. I know Melodyne does this. Not sure about yours, tho!)

It's much better to tell him (assuming he knows what it is): "Play C minor with the leading tone (B), and without the leading tone (B flat)". Because, in the end, that's all there is to it.
Yup, that's another way putting it! Teaching music theory is hard, eh?
