Yikes, I added to the cart and they increased the price using VAT.

Try using the code ANY-2999 to reduce the price. I think you can get the Triad/Byome bundle for $29.99 plus VAT

I thought field recording was mostly nature or cityscape. Sound fx is sound fx and location is location. :?

i like Rx, Cool Edit Pro, and all the previously mentioned modal synths, and of course Reaktor.

Thats pretty much what I know too. But in the recent years there has been a flood of people using the wrong term for the wrong thing. Beatmakers calling themselves producers, patch designers calling themselves sound designers, the same patch designers calling themselves sound designers saying they're doing foley design when in actual fact they are just blending noises and sound effects in with their synth patches....

The confusion is endless, so often some clarification is required.

SWhat do you do with your recordings, are you building up effects library, or perhaps contribute to another library??

Ah!! I was wondering whether it was something like this. Okay now that I have more clear idea about what you do with it I can offer a few suggestions.

Having good restoration software like a denoiser, something to help deal with wind and rustle, and help you edit out errant sounds that aren't desirable. There's a few options, but iZotope RX is one of the most flexible and useful. The downside is its quite expensive, though it does come as a cheaper "essential" version and they do offer a subscription model.

Thats the boring, but useful suggestion, but now for the more fun, creative ideas...

The same company also does an instrument called Iris, that allows you to select certain parts of the frequency spectrum and layer them with other elements and makes a playable instrument of it, if thats the kind of thing that interests you. It usually goes for super cheap somewhere, like $50 or less, and is worth simply looking at before forming an opinion

Effect-wise the Kaleidoscope plugin mentioned earlier can be used subtly to add movement to your sounds, even water like qualities if done right. Most modulation plugins will do, that just has several in one which gives you a lot of scope for creativity. You'll most likely only want to use it very subtly.

You might wasn't to consider the use of a a low-pass, high-pass, or band-pass filter. You can use any eq for this but there are more flavoursome eqs to be had, often borrowed from classic hardware/synthesizers. While the same company that does Kaleidoscope above all does a great filter (Waves MetaFilter), there some other good ones out there, Arturia comes to mind.

Some other things you can think about its delay to add some echo to the vibe and a stereo widener could help focus or spread your sounds more widely.

+1 for Iris2!

Yep. The Restoration Suite includes a nice set of tools for a reasonable price of $99. They also offer – via Plugin Boutique – a education discount (50% off)
It refuses description, allowing only the vague approach of adjectives: dark, light, raw, angelic. Who or what is making these noises? Where are they coming from and what do they point to? What kind of entity can leave such a troubling sonic remnant?

simon.a.billington wrote: Sun Sep 05, 2021 2:41 pm While I'm a big fan of Kaleidoscope like these guys, I do feel inclined to ask what kind of field recording are you doing??

Is it recording on location for film/tv, or are you building a library of sound effects, or do you perhaps go around recording music and performances in different locations. Because the kind of tools you'd find useful depends very much on your answer here.
I use field recordings primarily in one of two ways: 1. As the starter for a track, heavily edited, looped etc. with other elements added as the track grows. 2. Capturing some aspect of a location and adding that in later. Sometimes just using ambient sound as an IR, you'd be hard pressed to recognise the recording but it's there in essence, imparting it's fingerprint to the recording.
