Hey there

Any video editors on the forum? I have Windows Music computer Kaby Lake 7770K processor and 4770K everything else computer. I recently started working with video editing and installed Adobe suite on my Everything computer and it can't handle it. The Videos crash during rendering and Adobe Media Encoder freezes all the time, unable to finish encoding. There is known issue with Windows graphics driver, it tells me to install newer version but this driver can't be installed on this computer. I use dedicated gaming graphic card, but it also out of specs for Adobe.

Now my music computer has slightly better graphics card that I think on Adobe list and it is newer so it should not have issues with onboard graphics driver, however, I DO NOT WANT to risk my music computer. I have every software synth known to the world installed on it as well as probably 70% of well knows effects. It took a year to reinstall everything when migrating from old computer, I can't have this machine freezing and acting out. I dont want any junk on it, I am at maximum capacity on most drives and SATA ports, I dont want to risk it.

Would you recommend using music computer for video editing or should I build new computer when new processors released? Thank you very much.

Sounds like you probably have some issues on that older computer. Problems with media encoder are generally codec related IME. Been a while since I used it, but most of the codecs don't even use the gpu as I recall...

*A simple way to test if the machine is insufficient is to lower the resolution.

Hint: I would NOT install Adobe CC on music computer at all. Its just a monster these days, the background 'helper' stuff takes a lot of memory and I wouldnt ever be surprised if they up the DPC latency significantly

At work I use medium powered laptop with AMD chip to churn out the videos. Works just fine, no problems.
It might be your GPU is not supported, have you tried using it without GPU support for rendering? Its chooseable there when you select the clips and press CTRL-M

Thank you for your replies. To clarify, when Media Encoder freezes, the entire computer freezes- no keyboard or mouth- it just stays where it was at a time of freeze. Dead. Needs hard restart.

What you mean by dropping resolution? Of the video or of the monitor? I have 2 X 4K monitors, so my resolution is set to 4K. The videos that freeze with media encoder are made with this commercial template that allows me to insert 4-5 30 seconds videos and it plays it in sequence with basic overlays... I only have 16GB of memory. Initially Template was for 4K videos, also Videos not 4K. I encode to HD. Last setting H264 Facebook 1080P.

Legend, Video Rendering shows Mercury Playback Engine Software Only. It is grayed out, no options.

Dropping the resolution of the video you are working on lowers the processing and memory requirements is all. Anyway, my computer has the 4770k and 16GB of ram as well, and I don't have a trouble at 1080p, nor have I ever. Also 2 Nvidia GTX770s for the record. I can use the media encoder just fine, but I'm using win 8.1 currently. Though, I do have to upgrade to win 10 soon on account of the Diablo 2 remake...

Again it sounds like a software issue to me. I dunno if it would be worth it to you to fix it, as the simplest way would be to start with a clean OS installation.

something doesn't sound right with the video machine.
I would please, if you like, keep audio production on alpha machine.
If u have the patience, I bet Kaby Lake socket machine can edit video.

--the second thing I would do is order a mid-range NVidia graphics card for it

The video editing is dependent on frame-rate and resolution,
if these are dropped- the processing load drops.

i know we can edit video with premiere since 2001, so that is not really a contention

--the first thing I would do is a controlled install of Windows 10,
back everything up and re-install, try again with Premiere,Photoshop,Illustator and AfterEffects

--and as the system used to lock- be prepared to lock instead of losing work
not being able to render shouldn't lock the os afaik

-I'm not a graphics guy really, but I bet that Kaby-Lake socket can be cajoled into editing video at some point

I'd say wipe completely the install, if you meant that, its the best method.
I think Adobe dropped some older GPU's from the acceleration, and that might affect..

Kaby lake 7770K is 4 cores, 8 threads. So is Haswell 4770K. I use Asus AMD Radeon HD 7870 graphics.
I dont believe reinstalling Windows is solution for everything. I reinstalled Windows on this computer like 6 or 8 times already. Latest reinstall probably a year old, and I only use this computer to check Facebook/email and resize pictures. No gaming, no weird downloads, it stays pretty clean most of the time...
I am using these video templates- because I am new to it, I can't tell how graphic intense they are. I was able to render my first video in After Effects, but this 2nd video struggling. The template contains space holders to replace with my own video, so I inserted like 5 30 seconds videos, wondering if it is too much for my 16GB memory or else... I but these libraries when on sell at about $14- they have first week intro offers, so I collected them. I would otherwise not know how to use After Effect. https://www.project-boxx.com

After Effects is super cool. Basically a sort of Photoshop-lite over time. For instance, when you apply a blur in PS, its the same thing, but over a series of frames in an animation, so it happens gradually. A motion blur with actual motion. Anyway, it can do tons more than that, and is well worth equating one's self with imo. If familiar with the concepts of layers and whatnot in PS, you can adapt to Ae quickly. I think it's pretty safe to say, you can use Ae to make any footage look better in a myriad of ways

After Effects uses mainly CPU for the effects the last time I had to use it. Also it wants all the memory

16GB is ok for Premiere but Premiere preview will use GPU if you choose it when you make the project..
You may want to try Software Rendering on creation https://i.imgur.com/sNd9TMC.jpg and on rendering settings in Media Encoder https://i.imgur.com/zfrCk62.jpg
NOTE: This will make CPU work hard instead of relying GPU acceleration, but if the crash etc. are from GPU it should circumvent those.

Hi, Legend

The Encoder only uses Mercury Software only for rendering. The hardware or GPU is not even on the option list. It still free3zes at 720 resolution. I think I was able to run it to the end at 420... It set to 13Gb of memory, 3 for other things. Thank you.

With a 4th gen processor, it's not going to be a great experience but it should still work, whether your graphics card is explicitly supported or not. Your most likely culprits are the templates you are using. In my experience, they tend to be poorly made or made with very old versions of the software that don't run well on newer versions.

Try to do some simple editing from scratch and see how that goes. Or look for simpler templates/projects, that have been created with recent versions of the software, to get you started. You might find tutorial project links on YouTube. Just look for tutorial videos that are less than a year old.

I’ve got CS5 on my music machine. Works fine. On my work machine (graphics) I’m running CS Cloud and it generally works fine, though something is up that made it refuse to open some MP4 that was made with Visual Synth. I didn’t bother trouble shooting, I just stuck with CS5, as it’s got everything I need.

My CS6 has stopped working. They reckon it was pirated but it cost me a small f**king fortune - More than $1100.00 to upgrade from CS4 - and I've got the f**king packaging to prove it's legit. Adobe don't give a f**k. But we're allowed to use our CC work licenses at home so it doesn't annoy me too much, except on principle.
