Reaper’s my main DAW primarily because of how good it is with MIDI and Audio routing. Doesn’t matter how many fancy extras a DAW has if it can’t do the basic job of piping music data from one thing to another how you want it to and when you want it to.

The problem with Reaper is it’s about as inspiring to work in as a wet fart compared to Reason..

I installed Reason Lite this morning to see what all the fuss is about, and found the whole interface cluttered and confusing. I doubt I would want to do any serious work in it, and I felt no real desire to play either. I loaded up the Reason Rack in Studio One and had a little "play" but that was about it. I much prefer "piping data" around in Studio One.

Is that a fact? How would you "pipe" LFO signal from lead synth on one track to feedback amount of delay device on another track in Studio One?

Ah, is that what "piping data is about ? In that case I guess Reason Rack in Studio One would fit that bill then. There must be other software that does that sort of stuff that runs in Studio One ?

You can't drag cables between two instances of Rack Plugin running in Studio One (or other DAWs), whereas inside of Reason you can easly take the CV out from e.g. Subtractor playing bassline and connect it to CV in that controls depth of The Echo sitting on Europa playing an arp pattern on a different track.

Perhaps they'll come up with some tech to facilitate communication between Rack Plugin instances - like Neutron or Pr-Q3 do - but for now that's not possible yet.

You must not have more than one instance of the Rack plugin in any DAW other than Reason.
But you can send Midi on 16 different channels into that one Rack I guess. As the Rack synths can‘t deal with MPE anyway that should be sufficient…

Ok, I decided to give this DAW another go, and managed to get it working with my Nektar Panorama P6 which has improved the experience vastly.

The subtractive synth I could hardly see now appears as hardware on the Nektar and can be treated as hardware which is great. The jury is out on whether the synth is much good, but that's a different story.

Anyway, you mentioned controlling synths with CV. Does that have to be a hardware synth? My SH101 has decided to stop working, so thats out. The reason I ask is because VSTs loaded into the rack do not show up on my Nektar, but there is a "CV programmer" on the front of VSTs. So do you somehow use midi to control the CV programmer?

You mean Subtractor? That synth plugin is literally 21 years old as of right now. I mean, for a basic subtractive synth is gets the job done, but - keep that in mind. And if you're having a hard time seeing anything in R12, you just zoom.
