Do you need buy the main plugin first? Or is it a build as you go? As in a free player added on to.

If you are talking about the likes of the "Rock Edition", "Metal Edition" etc etc, they will work on their own. TH-U Full includes everything that is included in the various 'Editions'. If by chance you are talking about the 'Rig Libraries' you need either TH-U Full or one of the other 'Editions'

Be sure to demo TH-U, I was a user since TH2, to me there was always something not quite right with it, but I kept updating, I just recently sold TH2/TH3/TH-U and a heap of RIG libraries, IMO there is much better available. YMMV

You need to get some version of TH-U before you can use Rig Libraries, they don't come with a player by themselves.
I was hyped into buying some packs and TH-U Rock along with them during black friday sale. What I can say is definitely demo TH-U first. The extra packs I bought (American Classics and Bogie MKV) are unfortunately NOT dramatically better than rigs included in the demo, so if you're not fond of the demo rigs, then I don't think that additional packs will satisfy you.
Overall, it's definitely not a "software kemper" breakthrough.

Just to balance out @jinotsuh, I also am a longtime Overloud TH series user, and find TH-U to be pretty excellent. But I absolutely agree that you (and everyone) should demo before buying, as what you're looking for, and opinions as to what sounds good, obviously and inevitably vary tremendously from person to person.

The rig libraries in TH-U are fantastic. That's not to say the included gear in TH-U isn't good, because everything is excellent, but something about the convolution based amp modelling in the rig libraries seems to take the realism and playability to a whole new level. I have the 'American Classics' pack and it's a go-to for clean / breakup tones (which are IMO the hardest type of guitar tone to emulate).

I think the best part of TH-U is the Brunetti gear (I would not want to be without it anymore) and I think they are only included in the full version (or if you buy Brunetti hardware). Regarding rig libraries: I find the ones from LRS quite amazing in quality. With the latest version there is the possibility included to also demo rig libraries. Thus, for sure: try before you buy!

I really like the choptones libraries I own. I’d put them up against any other amp sims and probably end up favoring them. There are some downsides to the rig libraries though: you don’t get customized amp controls and Skeumorphic GUI’s, you don’t get spring reverbs or vibrato, which for Fender amps can suck, and stomp boxes are built into some of the captures which is great on the one hand (authentic sounding) but very limiting on the other (can’t turn them in it off and tweak controls). But sound wise, when you find one that works, they’re really terrific. But you can’t do much to dial in your own perfect tone…someone’s done that for you.
