Some two years ago I thought this would be the end of my Ultralite interface. This is the first gen, not mk3, firewire version. I thought of a replacement due to new mac systems coming in and firewire interfaces being ditched.
However, the Ultralite is immortal. It works perfectly fine with three chained adapters (computer's Thunderbolt3/USB-C to Thunderbolt 2, Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800, Firewire 800 to FIrewire 400 and the cable to the Ultralite), it still does draw power from the interface, it does allow 2,7ms roundtrip latency on 32 samples buffer (1,3 ms output latency). Works seamlessly with latest macos versions (Big Sur perfect operation) and with M1 processors.
Still, I shall need to get another interface for my other studio system, as previous (much newer motu) died not long ago. What I need is one bus powered device, 4 line inputs, 1 mic input (+48 power), and - of course - with a latency comparable to the one I have on my old ultralite. 24/96 is sufficient. No need for onboard processors. And possibly USB-C connection... I realise that the MOTU MK2 or 4 shall sound just fine, but the one that died just recently was one of those... is it because they are now Made In China quality or I was just lucky? The Ultralite I have was made in the USA. Or shall I be looking for another Ultralite with all these adapters? Its hard to find one now in a condition like mine.
A good competitor for Ultralite 1st gen (still alive!)?
