so, there's a website out there, which shall remain nameless, where you can check some nice how-to video files of some of my favorite producers, who will remain nameless (underground-leftfield dance producers.)
and, its very informative, what with these cats giving breakdowns on how they make their tracks, their rigs, even building a track from the ground up.
what was amazing, though, was; one cat said he used cracked software, as does "everybody" he associates with... another cat was lauding limewire. and both of these guys were characterizing the music biz as a mess!
i can understand the 14 year old downloading her black eyed peas... what can ya do? but when major, magazine cover artists, whose income depends on avoiding the p2p's, admit to downloading songs AND vst's, what can ya say?
where are we headed? just wonder if the days of the "professional" musician or "professional" vst designer are numbered?

well, i just think its funny pro musicians are the ones who
a) use p2p to cop trax, when their bread is buttered by people NOT downloading p2p but paying 4 them... or
b) have big studios, with tons of hardware, but still feel loading in a cracked minimoog v, for instance, is no big deal.
if artists don't speak up on file sharing, who will?

Just to say this - back when Kraftwerk hacked beatboxes to make them 'personally playable' to Bernard Albrecht and others building Heath & Allen and Paia synths and playing a Melodia while being surrounded by Emu's and such... I don't find 'cracked software' THAT much different? Sure, the equilibrium balance of what can be had and how it can be incorporated is HUGE today. But it still comes down to 'talent' and 'commitment'. IE: so you got a crack of Discovery which you think is a COOL synth. Yet, new patchbanks can't be loaded to it. Do you carry on and learn and create with it, or chuck it for the next crack that comes by? Honestly, I'd rather hear someone who's learned the 'hard way', but is so endearing of their cracked synth/effect, as opposed to someone who's been 'spoon fed' and has all the latest patches and updates so they hardly have to make any effort to make new interesting music.
How does THAT squeeze your tea bags?

Why ?
So I can go wholesale sample the fukkers and use
their stuff in my tracks.
If it's been made with cracks/warez they ask for
it.
Honestly if the validity of purchased software
means nothing to them then the music they make
deserves the same level of WHOLSALE disrespect
if you ask me.
You made it with warez people don't think you
should be makin' a profit of it then sorry
What a bunch of fuggin' tossers !!!!! [/b]

The other irony here is the other thread called 'Your Favorite Vocal Sample...' Everyone remembers samples in songs taken from movies, other songs, found sources... LOTS of them! Is Clint Eastwood or Rickie Lee Jones suing Ministry or The Orb? Yeah sure, I'm sure these bands have paid certain 'clearances' hopefully beforehand. But we all know MANY don't still.
Software, samples - just the way it is.
Bruce Hornsby version I mean, not the Tu Pac rip off.

dj shadow using a 4 track cassette for years as a kid, squeezing every possibility out of it, to the point of manually flanging the tape and turning it around for reverse fx and what not, till finally saving up enough for his mpc 3000 and, as he says, being so stoked that he was "shaking and sweating" as he went thru the manual in one night, that qualifies as the "hard way."Steven West wrote:Honestly, I'd rather hear someone who's learned the 'hard way'
downloading a $150 plug in 4 free doesn't seem like much struggle, especially since your scenario is so unrealistic... u mean a guy's just gonna download ONE cracked synth... and stay on it and program it even though he can't put in new presets? doubt it.
