Hi,
I want to practice live guitar playing more and I think band in the box would be a good thing for me to do this with.
Are there any alternatives software or methods that you prefer?
Any BITB suggestions?
Thanks!

BIAB is excellent, especially if you play jazz IMHO. The RealTracks have added a whole new level of realism to what was already a very good practice program. PG Music usually run very generous sales around the holidays, so you may wish to wait until then.

http://www.chordpulse.com/
Probably the easiest backing track generator I have ever used. Loads of styles to choose from, and pretty inexpensive at $29. (they offer a 14 day free trial)
... and the interface is much nicer than the ever-so-dated BIAB.

Chordpulse is good.
JJazzlab gives more variations for free. It does take a bit of time to put together the app with a good soundfont library and a soundfont player. Plus collecting songs and styles.
Biab is also good but pricey and a bit overwhelming. The ability to drag the composition over to the daw is excellent.
