"Apple is building immersive music-authoring tools directly into Logic Pro later this year".

I'm sure every Logic user noticed that unusual announcement from Apple when they introduced Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos on their Apple Music streaming platform in June.
If you don't want to wait for the Logic release and already want to get your feet wet with the Dolby Atmos format with Logic or any other DAW you are using, you can with the help of my new book "Mixing in Dolby Atmos - #1 How it Works".

I explain not only the software "Dolby Atmos Renderer" (available as a free 3-month trial) in great detail, but also the eco-system around it. Lots of information about the technology, the delivery mechanism, and new mixing and mastering workflows with many unique diagrams and graphics that makes it super easy to understand that new format.
Get a head start for your music and create Dolby Atmos mixes in Logic and deliver them to the streaming services with Avid Play and DistroKid as the first two aggregators to accept Dolby Atmos mixes.
More information about my book (available as pdf, iBook, Kindle, and printed book) on my website.

don't you need the playback system for it to be worthwhile?

It requires quite some infrastructure to even approach it really.
This is about a specific profession, this as a hobby you'd need to be wealthy to get into

This is exactly why I wrote the book. There is so much misconception or lack of information about Dolby Atmos. Just to clarify your concerns:

No, you don't need any infrastructure. Your DAW with the free 3-month free trial of the Dolby Atmos Renderer on your laptop and headphones is all you need. And of course the knowledge on how to use it. That's were the book comes in.
No, this is not a specific profession. Nuendo and DaVinci have the Renderer already built into their DAW. Once the Logic update comes out, it will be accessible to even more users, and I'm sure other DAWs will follow which eliminates the need to buy any additional software.
No, this is not a hobby. Immersive Audio is the new Stereo. 80% of music nowadays is consumed over headphones that allows to listen to 3D Audio (Atmos or any other format) using Binaural Rendering.
No, you don't have to be wealthy to get into it.

So once the new Logic comes out, there will be no need for additional software. Dolby Atmos will be possible entirely in Logic?

The official announcement is "Apple is building immersive music-authoring tools directly into Logic Pro later this year". How that materialize into the Logic app, we have to wait until the update is actually released. There seems to be a trend (or a push from Dolby?) to have everything integrated in a DAW without additional software because Nuendo and DaVinci Resolve already have that capability.

well with respect, in my lexicon it's either a professional focus - eg: post production for picture - or a hobby. We seem to be on the same page with 'not a hobby', though I'm not entirely certain in context.

I'm familiar with it from Resolve, but here the studio version is a prerequisite, is my basic meaning.
First – Atmos adds “height” speakers. These can be physical speakers in the ceiling, or secondary elements in normal speakers or soundbars, that bounce sound off the ceiling to create the perception of three dimensional sound.

very cool developments all the same

I recently got the NX tracker from Waves. You attach it to your head phones…
If you never tried, you can‘t imagine it. You would not need any speakers to get virtually immersed in a room with many speakers just with your headphones. It works and is very affordable…
