Why the iLok hate?

ilok is annoying as it's more complicated than it needs to be. I have 2 soft ilok accounts, messed up by registrations when I bought software. So I have some licenses on the wrong account and most on the correct account.

I contacted ilok and they point blank refused to move the licenses. Said they'd charge me $50 per license. Yet the vendor can move them instantly with no charge. Its the same email linked for both accounts, and ilok could move them instantly. Its a ball ache, especially with useless companies like AIR MUSIC who never answer support.

But the ilok system works better than Waves Central, and I would prefer now to use the dongle tbh after a recent hardware change because its easier. But to do that I need to move all the licenses to one account.

Oh and I hate dongles but now I can see the benefits. Its just dongle failure that bothers me.

Only developers can possibly love iLok. Urs is very happy not to be bound to iLok and has a caring smile upon his face for his competition.
I don‘t have problems with iLok, but that does not make me love that system at all. I accept it because I have to if I want to use software which is protected with that system. Thats it! No love and no hate… I‘d prefer a world which does not need that sort of protection to feed the developers. Partially it does exist btw… There are enough professional open source projects which can feed their developers…

Yeah I thank all developers that don't use elicenser, ilok or codemeter, or anything similar.

But as you said, needs must.

Exactly, I have avoided a few plugs because I didn't want to get tied in but then have a few freebies/cheapies on ilok, nothing essential (would miss quadravox though). I lost a couple when a hard drive crashed, some devs were excellent at giving me new authorisations but the ones I lost still taunt/haunt me in the license manager. :)

Frankly, I couldn't live without some of my iLok plugins. The Eventide stuff, the Exponential Audio stuff, even iZotope Break Tweaker, and Stutter Edit. All great stuff I wouldn't want to do without.

Breaktweaker and Stutter Edit arent ilok though are they ? They arent on mine, just the izotope product portal.

They might have an alternative way of authorization, and I just authorized them with iLok. I'll take a look, maybe there's a way to change it.

Even though it doesn't really make a difference to me, in this case.

I remember at one time having a strong feeling about all this, I think it was right after my old iLok dongle had become deprecated due to the security having been cracked and I was gonna have to get a new one and do the whole thing. That was frustrating and I think I swore them off for a while basically out of frustration. However, since they moved to this cloud-based & machine-based activation I have had no issues with iLok software and it just works for me to activate things and keep them running. I don't prefer it any more than I prefer other call&response activation systems, mind, but it hasn't been a specific hassle or issue for me in years.

I actually was enjoying ilok for the convenience until my laptop’s partition table got corrupted. I tried everything to pass the bios messages but ultimately had to kill all partitions and reinstall windows 10 from scratch. Once I installed ilok, it detected as a different machine code! Now I have dozens of plugins registered that I cannot access using the exact same laptop. That’s frustrating. Then some of my Exponential Audio plugins are only one register per account.
In that sense I changed my mind in a relatively short amount about my opinion of Ilok.

You are aware that you can contact companies to reset your iLok activations in such a case?

There are two kinds of iLok users. Those who have had problems and those how haven't had problems....yet. :hihi:

Must admit there are a couple of Eventide plug-ins I would really like, but I don't want them enough to get iLok. :(

Yeah and most are fine

Except AIRMUSIC because they are a joke.

there are also two kinds of ilok users... those that use the dongle and those that only use their machines and yes if your system dies or if you have to replace hardware the new system/hardware will be seen as another system so there could be potential problems if you only use your machine for licensing.

if everything is on the dongle it really doesn't matter what happens to your system or the pace software that was on the machine. you just reinstall the pace manager and plug your dongle back in and log onto your account. now there is a ton of bad memories and experiences from the past when a dongle goes kaput. the older usb dongles were not the best quality imo. it was and still probably is a pain to get everything back in order if you lose the dongle but you would have to do something drastic to kill a dongle... even a lightening strike would have a hard time getting to the dongle before something else pops first protecting it from the surge. i know... i was hit and had to rebuild a system and i had no trouble with my ilok stuff... just had to rebuild and reinstall everything... plugins and software.

i do understand how people feel but don't let others sway your decisions. some of the top plugin developers all use ilok and they are not about to change so if you wish to use them you will have to use ilok in some form or fashion and i would suggest using the dongle instead of just your computer. myself... i stayed away from pace and ilok for the longest time due to the horror stories but i have been using ilok via the dongle for about six to seven years now and not had one problem. i even upgraded my v2 dongle to v3 and i am planning on upgrading to the new v4 usb C pretty soon just for convenience. (just hate the price of the dongle lol)

cheers
