As far as I can tell he is mainly in search of real drumset samples, we just added drum machines to the discussion to additionaly cover the 1980s style of electronic funk.

You can likely get the sound you want with the free MT Power Drum Kit and the right processing.

I doubt that MT Power Drum Kit will cut it for the 70s funk drum sound. Nailing the drum sound of a specific era or genre has a lot to do with the way the drums were recorded (number of mic positions, mics used, analog compressors and tape machines etc).

Then of course the choice of drum pieces, doesn't make sense to use hardrock type snares for bossa nova for example, there are distincts kits and pieces that have distinct timbres.

Then there are genre specific tunings of drum pieces.

2 different snares do not sound alike, just because they were recorded "dry".

And when processing you must also make sure to use genre / era specific effects, a late 1980s Lexicon reverb doesn't make sense on a snare that is supposed to sound like early 1970s.

Hence my above suggestions of drumkits that are tailor made for this era and always keep the original recording chain of the era in mind if your goal is to sound authentically.

Well, we can agree to disagree about the suitability of MT Power Drum Kit. I find it a very serviceable, general purpose acoustic kit.

The drums on "Rock with Your" sound fairly generic to me, though performed brilliantly. The guitar, keys, and strings definitely sound "of an era".

Your drum recommendations might have more disco/funk flavor "out of the box", depending on which songs you are comparing to, but also require an expensive VST or tedious sample mapping.

Of course processing matters, too, and I said as much. The OP is new here and appears to be looking for a virtual instrument, even though this is posted in the Effects forum. That's why I suggested a free, easy-to-use, and versatile acoustic drum program.

I'd like to hear back from the OP on what worked for him, but won't be surprised if that doesn't happen.

As long as we're pointing to this thread again, Drumdrops Vintage Disco kit has that thumpy, deadened sound.
