I wasn't talking about how dark they are.....

EnGee wrote: Fri Oct 22, 2021 9:52 pm Personally, I'm fine with 4k 27" scaled 150% if I stick to one DAW!
I've never used anything but 100% scaling for OS, DAW, and Plugins so I'm wondering what is the advantage and need to use higher scaling values?
It is not about the advantages really, but the 27" monitor is small for the 4k when it comes to fonts. So, the recommendation is to have it 150% scaled (and they are right). It is the best balance between good visibility and good resolution. it is the same for most labtops with 1080p 14" monitor as they scale the fonts to 125% (the recommended scaling).
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

My studio monitor is 27" at 1920x1080, 100% scaling and that seems like a good compromise.

I've resisted going 4K because of all the issues I've seen posted with various plugins. :?

I've, always been open to adapt and change GUI's I've provided for users in addition to providing a range of them for the user to use. This asks in whether any of Rob Papens plugins have allowed you to choose a different skin for them other than the default. I don't recall any from memory.

It's a personal taste really. You go with the most you like and feel comfortable with. It also depends on what plugs do you have and if you are willing to let go if it's too small for your eyes.

Almost all of the well maintained plugins seem to scale for 4K now. Kontakt still doesn't.

Some DAWs will help to resize unscaled plugins to a bigger size.

With issues I assume you mean the GUI being too small? Myself I would think I loose too much possible screen space/estate using 1920x1080. I have a 38" 3840x1600 monitor, but have been "forced" to use 115% scaling due to some plugins and software. It's an O.K. compromise for me.

try disabling tooltips and animations in the plugin. This will help determine why the GUI is slowing down.

I use a 24" monitor at 1920x1080 and 125% much of the time as my eyes aren't what they used to be. I can use 100% here and there, but 125% is what I normally use.

That and I've seen functional issues with some plugins when system or DAW scaling was set to anything other than 100%. (Vital comes to mind first)

I think that's another issue, some plugins need scaling others don't. Off the top of my head I think only the RP plugins don't have a size that displays perfectly at 1080 in every DAW. He fails to take into consideration the toolbar or window border that DAWs place around plugins so in the five DAWs I own only FL Studio can display the whole Predator 3 GUI without cutting off the bottom.

Yes my eyes are getting really bad. I haven't felt the need to scale yet but I do have special computer glasses designed to work at the distance I normally view any monitor from.

Don't get me wrong I'd love for the Rob Papen plugins (or any plugin for that matter) to allow user skinning or even just colors edits but he has given no indication that will ever happen.

I was demoing a lot of the plugins that come in the RP Explorer package and found many of the GUIs almost too unpleasant to use (for example too dark even though all the other plugins I use are fine). RP GUIs tend to look a bit outdated and "lo-fi" to me but that's just personal opinion.

As for your GUI work, you are obviously a very talented artist I just don't care for your style. That's not an insult we just have different preferences when it comes to style.

Yes RP plugins have some really old school vibe which isnt bad at all. But sadly the guis are not really well optimized... i always ask myself if they dont test it one a few setups, isnt hard nowadays.

Yes and it's not really an intelligent preset creator it's designed to make variations on an existing patch and even then I found it to be lackluster.

In other words you can't start with the Default patch and make it come up with a full patch or at least I couldn't after several attempts.

I normally don't use randomizers but I have to admit the one in Warlock yields usable results about 90% of the time. Good for inspiration when you can't find one of your own patches to fill a need. :tu:

Old school or outdated it's all in personal perception. They feel outdated to me like something from 15 years ago.

I have to think that no one who was involved with Predator 3 either developers or beta testers were using 1080 or they would have spotted the size issues that affect 80% of the DAWs I use.

I also get the feeling that the GUI optimization was not fully tested either and I think I can actually see the issue occurring in one of Rob's videos with the big output display.

But all that said I do love the sound of RP plugins so putting up with the GUI issues is something I'll just have to accept.

I can't get mad at Rob. I really like the guy as a person and as a musician and as a developer. :tu:
