Application that converts .mid to .wav?

Anyone know of a app that can turn .mid into .wav? Neromedia Player claims to, but it only can read the .wav's it produces.

Isn't this basically what any sequencer does with .mid and, say, VST instruments? :?:

Midi cannot be turned to wav as such (until loaded in a wave editor as raw data). Midi is a set of instructions like: at that time, play this note, with this velocity, etc. So usually you feed it into a synth or a sampler. Almost every instrument in the KvR database can read midi data and 'convert' in into audio. You will need a host to use a vsti though. And you might need to capture the audio to turn it into a wave file. All this is possible with some effort and without much (if any) cost.

yeah, it's kinda like having a script, and looking for a program to turn it into a film.

i suppose it MIGHT happen that you stumble across a program that will do it to a degree, but things like the actors, what they look like, their facial expressions and whatever, they all depend on who's been chosen to play in the film. and they might be crap, too.

the midi file just tells the instruments what notes to play and when; what these instruments sound like is down to you. if you do find a program, then it will create one possible version of it, and there is every likelyhood that it will be a crap version using standard GM sounds...

but maybe that's what you want? i probably haven't helped here at all

There are many synthesizers out, which can actually render MIDI to wav (also in realtime of course).

But: This process merely works with *well designed* GM MIDI arramgements. It's like passing a General MIDI compatible arrangement thru a GM compatible synthesizer and render it to a file or to the output of your soundcard.

Due to the sounds of the different synthesizers (which are different), the resulting audio file may sound also different.

If a synthesizer (or plugin) isn't GM compatible, so you wouldn't get out anything senseful sounding (except you are exactly after this :hihi: ) orr the MIDI file is exactly written for this synthesizer.

Normally the GM synthesizer with the biggest "wavetable" and a complete implementation of effects (chorus, reverb) will sound best.

BTW: You can actually do this with *any* modern operating system on the fly by using the inbuilt software synthesizer !!!

Simply press the record button of your systems audio mixer while playing the software synthesizer (before you switch the mixer panel to "record what you hear") and record the audio file with any available audio recording software (i.e. an audio editor) in realtime :!:

This works internally on digital plain. So no external audio cables or any other difficult patching needed.

There is no need for using any crappy GM software plugin, due the crappy software GM synthesizer is novadays actually a part of any available operating system (including some handys) ...
