Arturia should just buy the rights to Martin Lüders' open source PG-8X, a remarkably authentic emulation of the Roland JX-8P. Arturia would need to add support for A and B tones (layers) within each patch to make it sys-ex compatible with the JX-10P and the MKS-70 and to provide a richer, layered sound. Another cool addition would be to add support for the new features of the Vecoven JX-8P/JX-10P/MKS-70 upgrade such as Pulse Width Modulation and extra LFOs and envelopes. With these additions, the Arturia clone would be a super charged "Super JX." With Arturia in charge of development and support, we should be able to get better cross-platform (VST3, AU, AAX) support and semi-regular updates. This would be a win win for both Arturia and Martin Lüders.

I could see that happening. They love to contract out the synth development. I could see them going for something like PG-8X or Nils' Kawai K1 (if they could get Nils' and Kawai's permission) and just throwing on the Arturia GUI, FX, and extended modulation.

I think an updated CS-80 is most likely. A new Prophet would be a big yawn considering we've got RePro already, a new Minimoog emulation the world does not either...

I think my original call was we'd see one new digital synth in V-Collection 9 (which we got early), one update (I call CS-80), then one or two synths we're not really expecting (maybe another analog synth like a MemoryMoog or Jupiter-6, and maybe a vintage non-synth keyboard). I could even see them doing a fully modeled 808 and entering the drum machine world (I never connected with Spark - but talking more of a strict emulation). A vintage x0x drum machine with some extended modulation would be an appealing product.

But what is wrong with PG-8X? And why shouldn't Arturia do something else?

All Im gunna say is Arturia will not disappoint in 2022. I will leave it at that. Microfreak update is sick, they have a totally new engine for their plugins (Jupiter and Juno), and they are a really chill company. Everyone should be very excited for the future regarding Arturia.

But what is wrong with PG-8X? And why shouldn't Arturia do something else?

Because the PG-8X is not well supported. Unless I'm wrong, there is no Mac AU version, no AAX versions on either Mac or PC and it doesn't run on the latest Mac (and possibly Windows) operating systems. For instance, the Mac VST version of PG-8X won't run on my late 2015 MacBook Pro running macOS Catalina and Cubase Pro 11. This is hardly cutting edge hardware or software. And yet PG-8X won't run on my computer.

Plus. Arturia would be able to create a better GUI, add musically useful mod routings, and include nice-sounding FX.

An updated CS-80 and ARP 2600 would interest me. That CS-80 GUI is awful, as was the previous jupiter GUI. But they fixed that with the newer jupiter, along with a better sound. And the audio rate modulation and raw sound of the Synthi shows that they could improve the ARP2600.

Hopefully they don't stop updating the older plugins, especially those two.

I feel like Arturia’s been hitting it out of the part lately. I was really hoping they did a Fizmo, but considering how much the effects are a part of it’s sound, my guess is that it’s a bridge too far and they did do a great SQ-80. My only issue is that it seems to have a wonky implementation of the Transwaves.

I can totally agree, especially with the layering, it was central to the synth. It is always better to handle a layered patch than arrange splits in Ableton separately for each preset.

I really miss my Vecoven JX, but it was huge and always had some quirks to live with.
While this is a prediction topic - I can also see that they considered the JX at some point.

Korg MS20 would be the logical step if I try to think, but makes me wonder why didn't they do Korg analog/DW synths already?
Korg Legacy (analog) was good, but never that good to be a real contender.
