I'm intrigued by guitar reverb pedals such as Walrus Audio Slö, Strymon Night Sky, and Chase Bliss Dark World. The recently announced eurorack module, Strymon Starlab, seems to be the most advanced unit among this group of 'weird' hardware reverbs.

These pedals start with some fairly standard reverb algorithms, then apply a variety of effects to the signal, such as:
  • volume envelope follower (autoswell) for the dry and/or wet signal
  • distortion, bit crushing, and other lo-fi texturizing
  • pitch modulation (of the entire signal, like putting a vibrato after the wet signal)
  • resonant filters, with modulation
I'm interested in lo-fi sounds, and I think that applying such processing to the reverb, rather than to the dry signal only, can give very interesting results. I know that it's possible to stack some different plug-ins to achieve this effect, or to build something in a modular environment, but I'm wondering if there are any well-designed plug-ins that do this sort of thing.

I know that Eventide MangledVerb and ValhallaÜberMod can do some of these tricks. Are there some other good options?

Tone2 Multi-FX (previously WarmVerb) might be worth a look. It's basically a multieffects plugin that is based on reverb, but lets you stack several different effects (e.g., tremolo, saturation, delays, distortion, phaser/flanger, vocoder) etc.

Valhalla Delay. It’s a delay but also does beautiful reverbs wih the diffusion. It has multiple modes and each has it’s own flavor of distortion and lofi grunge. Tape distortion, frequency shifting, bitcrushy pitch shifting, etc...

Yeah, I think that ValhallaDelay and ÜberMod are the best options right now. But I appreciate any other suggestions.

Melda Production MTurboReverb is a real playground.

Another SuperMassive here. And A1Triggergate. You can get many (weird) fx out of this combo. Sometimes I use Ambient Reverb as well. As an insert I use OrilRiver. However, I usually make trance like effects. That said, one could use A1Triggergate for any instrument in any popular genre. It's that versatile.

Not especially dirty but Surreal Machines Diffuse is a neat little plug for that no mans land between delay and reverb.

I have to back Ubdermod in this as well, love the 'tape reverb' sounds you can get from that. And UA Sandman Pro, turn up the diffuse knob for some very wonky verbs.
