It will be fun if Steinberg, in the middle of 2022, would announce that, unfortunately, but the dongle must stay for a minimum of one more year + only Rosetta 2 compatibility. I can imagine this fire coming from every forum

There was a small time window a couple of moons ago, I actually really considered buying Cubase to best compliment Cubase LE on my iPad I just got... Now I'm backtracking on everything iPad because although it is pretty capable for serious audio stuff, I'm not really into it. Should have bought an Air instead of the freaking 1000000$ Pro thing.

Hey I started with Pro24! That didn't even have a timeline, and didn't handle audioDrGonzo wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 4:42 pm Big time OT, but I got a bit nostalgic the other day when I reconnected my old Atari ST for doing some criminally lofi samples with it. That's where it all began. Cubase was probably the first software I ever bought. Damn how proud I was![]()

Cubase had the timeline but didn't have audio either when I got that for that matter...
I had a legit copy of Cubase with the notorious hardware dongle. It crashed so often because of it, I somehow got hold of a cracked copy and ran that instead. Dongles have moved on somewhat since those days, but if Cubase 12 is dongle free, it will be a happy end to a very very long journey.

I was the first person in the US to purchase a copy of C-Lab Creator (what eventually became Logic). I called up Digidesign which was then the distributor of C-Lab products and spoke to a guy who said, "Yeah, we just got a box of C-Lab stuff. I'll tell you what, I'll sell you a copy of Creator at a discount if you call me back and let me know what you think of it. That was super cool.noiseboyuk wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 6:11 pm Hey I started with Pro24! That didn't even have a timeline, and didn't handle audio
Cubase had the timeline but didn't have audio either when I got that for that matter...
However, when audio was added to Cubase in the early 90s (and Notator Logic still lacked audio recording capabilities,) I switched over from Logic to Cubase. I haven't looked back.

If Cubase 12 won’t have new GUI, menu improvements, and better file indexing, I’m switching over to StudioOne, Logic, Reaper or Cakewalk.

New GUI like any DAW's right now have new GUI's lmao......Bruh....All these DAW's look pretty much the same as they always have.TS-12 wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 3:52 am If Cubase 12 won’t have new GUI, menu improvements, and better file indexing, I’m switching over to StudioOne, Logic, Reaper or Cakewalk.

There are those who don’t need either thing. You wouldn’t hear a peep from me. You would hear from me if they expect compatibility with an os many don’t use, and the removal of a dongle that many have no issues with to be the bulk of the new version. Just saying.pixel85 wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 5:31 pm It will be fun if Steinberg, in the middle of 2022, would announce that, unfortunately, but the dongle must stay for a minimum of one more year + only Rosetta 2 compatibility. I'm kind of stuck. I have so many unfinished song files in Cubase, it would take me forever to export all the MIDI files into a new DAW.TS-12 wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 3:52 am If Cubase 12 won’t have new GUI, menu improvements, and better file indexing, I’m switching over to StudioOne, Logic, Reaper or Cakewalk.
Having said that, if Steinberg doesn't do something radical, I might start writing my new songs in Logic (even though I hate to be tied to Apple computers in case they start falling behind in desktop performance with their ARM chips).
Unfortunately, I think we will see more of the same with Cubase 12: A few more audio FX / mastering plugins (that no one needs,) some new content (that is of low quality and mostly useless), and a few interface tweaks (that don't address the scores of legacy dialogs and windows that don't match the current GUI design).
I hope I am wrong. But if history is any guide, it's probably time to start looking for a new DAW.

Do that and you’ll notice that other DAWs have their own issues and problems and will drive you nuts…TS-12 wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 3:52 am If Cubase 12 won’t have new GUI, menu improvements, and better file indexing, I’m switching over to StudioOne, Logic, Reaper or Cakewalk.
I tried that several years ago when C7 was introduced. Other DAWS were either missing features (S1) or had an even worse UI/UX than Cubase (Reaper) and while there were of course nice things that C didn’t have, I realized that it wouldn’t be worth the months learning new workflows and migrating projects just to have to get used to other flaws.
YMMV, of course.

"We're note making enough money lately... let's drop v.1 and v.2 versions, let's go straight to the next version instead".
Wavelab also jumped directly from v10 to v11. Months after WavelabCast. As 25+ year long Steinberg user, that has been pestered in recent years with "just upgrade to Nuendo, please" and seeing the constant "buy Cubase Artist, get Pro for free", I don't know what to think anymore.
Months of "Grace Period"? And those that are on Cubase 11 already are stuck with bugs and maintenance updates that will never go to v.1 or v.2?!
Presonus' Hardware Branch being on the verge of purchase as well... (same fate as Cakewalk?!)
...if only the "entry level" for Logic Pro wouldn't be so steep (you need the hardware!), then I might actually switch. Because here, Apple (former Emagic brand) actually seems to care about their users, listens to FRs, fixes bugs. The caveat... buy the hardware and don't have an older-than-3-versions OS.
I am really not liking Steinberg's current route at all.

How do you know it isn't ? You know as much as I do, and that's what I think. I think it's more embedded than you think since Cubase 5 , because as far as I know, that was the last one that was cracked.antic604 wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 11:04 amApple Silicone - sure. But dongle drop? How is that involving the core code of Cubase? Unless they've somehow originally embedded it into every bit of software, e.g. before you can draw a note Cubase checks if dongle is insertedLeVzi wrote: Sat Nov 06, 2021 10:49 am I suspect, like others do, its the dongle drop, and M1 support. The dongle drop I would assume is taking a lot longer and making the new system integrated and working its going to take 2 years.
I can't see much else being added, and if that is the case, that V12 is more to do with the Dongle Drop and M1 support with a limited amount of new features and improvements, I hope the price is going to reflect that, because i'd rather keep the dongle and make M1 support a point update for free as it should be.
I think 90% of the delay is AS. If that's the case, they should release 11.5 / 12 soon for Windows people and have the macOS version catch up in due time![]()

If it was that easy to remove, all versions would be pirated but they aren't, so it's obviously more integrated and harder to remove. They'll never tell us, but you simply cannot dismiss it, you aren't a coder.

There were "cracked" versions but it seems that all of them were crashing all the time with practically any operation*. So yeah, I would say that their licensing system must be integrated deep into the code, which would explain why their products are not really cracked.LeVzi wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 10:08 amHow do you know it isn't ? 1) Why does it matter if I'm a coder or not? It's not like there's only one way to do certain thing. Coding is just an execution of a design, that can take many forms. And not that it matter, but I've done quite a lot of coding both as a hobby and for work.LeVzi wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 10:08 amIf it was that easy to remove, all versions would be pirated but they aren't, so it's obviously more integrated and harder to remove. 2) Even if, like @Pixel85 suggests, pirated Cubase versions were crashing often it doesn't mean every piece of code - like adding a note, stretching audio file or tweaking FX knob - has a piece of code that checks for dongle! That would be ridiculous design! It's much, MUCH more likely there's a parallel process that checks for dongle say every 1 minute. And that should be easy to remove / replace / edit.

You were suggesting that the dongle code wasnt deeply integrated into the code meaning it wasn't the main reason for the delay in V12 release. And whatever coding you did wasn't writing Cubase.antic604 wrote: Sun Nov 07, 2021 12:36 pm1) Why does it matter if I'm a coder or not? It's not like there's only one way to do certain thing. I would suggest that removing the elicenser hardware from the Cubase program was the reason for not releasing 11.5 and V12 will be Dongle free and it took some major changes to the whole code. It maybe not a MIDI note , but opening a steinberg VST probably checked the hardware license. (im guessing) but it wouldnt surprise me at all. As it seems the cracked version crashed all the time, so obviously its deeply integrated and you dont just remove that quickly, and make it stable.
Its all supposition and only Steinberg know, but i'd bet money on it being the reason for the no 11.5 release and the delay to V12.
I would even go as far as to see performance improvements from the dongle being removed. All depends what kind of security they implement. (I pray its not codemeter)
