BREAKBEAT GUIDE IS NOW ONLINE...

http://breakbeat.hattrixx.co.uk

It's been A LOT of hard work to put this tutorial together. Please let me know what you think, guys! 8)

Well ,I'm just starting to look at it: I can really use it :)

And I must say I appreciate the way you make things approachable and non-dogmatic on the front page. Thanks for your work :)

Looks like you got all the bases covered there Hattrix. Good show I say! :D

those. wav files won't play in win media player...can't be bothered to get realplayer because it's crap and destroys your system.

Sorry Fractalism, you only need RealPlayer for the video content (which isn't necessary by any means). The wav files are standard 16/44.1 PCM!

Thanks to everybody who showed some support! :)

A quick question (hope I didn't miss it on the page):

When you load up the slices of a beat in your sequencer, do you tell the sequencer to cut/stop playing when the next slice is triggered?

So when SLice B plays, does A stop?

Yes. You tell the sequencer how long each cut plays... often this is done by the length of the trigger (note). What sequencer are you using? :)

I'm using Fl Studio - but I am learning to use the slicer for the first time  .

Prior to, well, today, I would try and edit out the sample I want and then trigger it in its own channel. So one break would consist of, like 6 samples I had prepped and edited triggered from the step sequencer. I would only use individual hits is what I'm trying to say, I think....

I never really got a good sound, especially with pitched or fast breaks, but ironically, I got better at programming realistic drum lines with a lot of time intensive velocity/quant editing.

The Breakbeats of Champions -- Wheaties, isn't it? ;-)

It's not my style of music, but I had a look anyway. Impressive! Your design is nice and clean; the content is literate, engaging, and witty; and from what I can tell from a quick shufty it's informative.

Well done, Hattrixx! *bow*

Ouroboros - I don't use FL Studio, but I get the impression you would need to load your breakbeat cuts into a virtual sampler and use the piano roll to edit, rather than the drum-specific features.

Meffy - Thanks very much for the kind words. Although, I wonder about the comment, "It's not my style of music". What style is that? I've tried to write the guide as non-specific as possible. Breakbeats can be a part of MOST musical styles these days... and even if you're not using any breakbeats, I'd argue that a lot of the techniques can be useful on other materials such as vocals.

I really wouldn't have put all that effort into writing a guide if it were only going to be appropriate to one closed-in style of music. Glad you liked it, though! :)

yes, that's certainly a/the standard way to do it: that's how I did it following your tutorial, and it woked well :) There is a built in slicer that comes with FL that is well spoken of, but it doesn't slice from slice point forward; it slices every separate hit. I', just not efective with it yet.

Thanks again for the lucid explanations: you certainly bested CM's tutorial!
