Dear Cubase friends,

Today would have been the day of the year when every member of our Cubase team leans back for a moment and watches with excitement how the next generation of Cubase is released into the world. For the last 10 years we have been working toward presenting customers our achievements at the end of the year. But this time it’s different.

With the decision to switch our license management system to a modern, flexible, and open solution, this project became our number one priority from day one. Our goal was to introduce the new system with the next major update, even if this would require us to postpone the release of Cubase. We wanted to be fully committed to the project and thankfully everyone at Steinberg felt the same.

Today, we would like to give you the heads up on the next generation of Cubase, which will be Cubase 12 by the way, and which we are already beta testing and plan to release in 2022. This will be the first Cubase version supported by Steinberg Licensing. Please have a look at the announcement of our president, Andreas Stelling, and the detailed FAQ section that we put together to answer your questions. If there are more questions on Steinberg Licensing, please let me know, and we will try to provide the answers on our website ASAP.

Steinberg Licensing: A new and exciting era begins 8

For those of you who expected to get the full list of new features and improvements in Cubase 12 today, I kindly ask for some more patience. Of course, the next generation is not only about Steinberg Licensing. We have been working on new features, workflows, and performance improvements in many different areas in order to deliver a worthy update. But I’m not going to reveal too many details and spoil the release for you. You know us — we’ll try to keep it secret for a while longer.

Still, there are some things that I can already confirm. Cubase 12 will introduce native Apple silicon support to begin with. Please be aware that VST 2 is not supported on native Apple silicon, except when run in Rosetta 2 mode. So please make sure that you let the plug-in manufacturers still hesitating to release VST 3 versions know that it’s about time!

Additionally, we can confirm that the grace period for Cubase 12 has begun with this announcement. This means that all new Cubase versions that are activated from today onward will be eligible for a free grace period update to Cubase 12. This delayed release of C12 I think may well upset the apple cart of regular things like the summer sale. Not saying it won't happen, but if C12 only gets released in June then it would surprise me to get a summer sale concurrent with it.

Who knows. They may do a Black Friday discount this year, which would include the grace period if they did.

New versions of Dorico, Nuendo and HALion are also confirmed for 2022.

We have previously said that we anticipated that Dorico 4 would be released before the end of 2021, but we recently made the decision to delay its release to early 2022, primarily to make sure that your first experience of using Steinberg Licensing is as seamless as possible. Dorico 4 will be followed later in 2022 by major releases for Cubase, Nuendo and HALion, each of which will also use the new system.

I think it just means you can’t update to the new thing, and then try to sell the old dongle with the previous version license on it while keeping the new version.

I feared that to be the case but was hoping it is not. I was expecting that any existing licenses will be easily transferable in future based on the new system, as currently it needs transferring them to USB dongle and shipping it to the buyer.

The worst part is they are saying we cannot update/upgrade it. That's absolutely ridiculous! I am planning to buy Groove Agent 5 soon. If they release GA6 in future, which will be surely after the new system is introduced, what it means in that I can't update my GA5 to GA6. Am I correct?

When you update to the new system any previous licenses that were eLicenser based become NFR. But you can sell the current license thats based on the Steinberg Licensing system.

If I buy Groove Agent 5 and activate it right now and let's say in future, after the new licensing is introduced and I have to obviously move to it, they release Groove Agent 6.

Can I update from GA5 to GA6? Can GA6 be resold then?

Of course it may be too early to ask this, but since I am planning to buy GA5 soon, I don't want to end up in a situation where I can't update to GA6. Reselling point is not a big deal right now.

Doubt it. Since buying v11 now gives you v12 for free in 2022 then that's already a discount.
