Breaktweaker Microedit Alternative

I love Breaktweaker Microedit ...except for the fact that it doesn't generate MIDI AND has an un-user friendly sample selection input method. Does anyone know of an alternative that allows you to divide sounds, set shapes, tensions and rotations accross steps Breaktweaker does? Stutter Edit 2 is not an viable answer unless I am not using it to its full potential.

I'm not sure if this would do exactly what Breaktweaker does, but have you tried using trackers like Renoise, or the "plugin version", Redux? They have sample manipulation capabilities that are extremely powerful.
A well-behaved signature.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a tracker? Never heard of it before.

It's basically a DAW that had a textual "spreadsheet" interface for note entry instead of a piano roll. This allows for sample manipulation commands to be conveniently entered into the timeline.
A well-behaved signature.

Wow, sounds like I'm light years behind. What would you recommend for the best tracker to get caught up to speed?

I guess the crux of what I'm looking to accomplish is making rhythms other than 1/2 1/4 1/8 1/16 and related triplets and dotted notes. I'm looking to make 5 beats per quarter note, 7 beats per quarter note, 9 beats and so on.

The new operators in Bitwig do this.

Renoise allows you to set rows-per-beat to whatever you want, so you could set it to 7, 9, etc. and thereby divide quarter notes up as you wish.alexlimbert wrote: Wed Nov 10, 2021 6:25 am I guess the crux of what I'm looking to accomplish is making rhythms other than 1/2 1/4 1/8 1/16 and related triplets and dotted notes. to be honest, you're probably 20 years more up to date. trackers were the shiz in the 90s before midi sequencers and stuff had crossed over into the pc space.alexlimbert wrote: Wed Nov 10, 2021 6:18 am Wow, sounds like I'm light years behind. but renoise/redux are great for this kind of thing - though the interface can take a bit of getting used to. if you aspire to Venetian snares type percussion madness in particular, look no further.

Thank you all for the great advice. The one follow up question I would like to ask is, do all of these Breaktweaker MicroEdit alternatives send midi rhythm output or is everything output audio, like Breaktweaker? Thank you.

Some good suggestions listed above - I'll add Geist into the mix too, as it can subdivide a step up to 8 divisions/repeats. A technique I use is to have one engine running at a normal rate, while a second runs much faster. I'll then string along a few steps with various subdivisions (3,4,5,etc) to get some interesting tension with glitched sequences. The shapes you can make with Breaktweaker are much more complex though. Also, the sampling in Geist is comprehensive - and the time stretching can be automated which is cool. Might not be what you're after, but it's worth a look at least.
