Opinions re. Sound of Waldorf Largo

To give you the benefit of the doubt I did reread your original post now which is edited and redacted 6 times...so I cannot make a fair assesment of your intent with the original post. I do remember though that your Title which has been changed as well was very aggressively poised and bordering on cynical towards Largo to say that it sounds terrible... Your tone throughout your post reinforced your cynism which got the undesired out come.

If I did edit my original post 6 times I can guarantee you that 4 of those times were for spelling, grammar, and word chose issues. I know I shouldn't let it bother me so much, but I'm a stickler for correct spelling, grammar, and especially word choice. And while my grammar is actually quite good, my spelling is atrocious. Hence the need for multiple edits.

Speaking of word choice, I don't think you mean "cynical" in your post above. You could say that I had a patronizing, arrogant tone, but not cynical. I'm not cynical about Waldorf releasing Largo, a software version of the Blofeld nor am I cynical about their motives for designing, developing, and releasing the original Blofeld.

I was just truly astonished at how "dreadful" Largo sounded on the basis of its presets and my own fruitless efforts to create some better patches. Again, this is all clear as day in my original post if only people could be arsed to read it.

Regarding the title of the thread, an hysterical KVR member was practically on the verge of a heart attack over the title. In his twisted mind, this was "bad advertising" (whatever that means) for Waldorf. Not wanting his impending stroke on my conscience, I reluctantly changed the thread title.

If I can give you some advice, why don't you go worry about things that matter.

I know I should just let this go. But my curiosity has gotten the better of me. What is it with you and aliasing? You go on and on about it in practically every other post. What's up with that?

You do realize there are half a dozen (or more) super successful, classic, genre-defining synths that aliased like mad? The Prophet VS, PPG/MicroWave, AN1x, JP-8000 (the synth that almost single handedly started the Trance movement), Nord Lead 1/2, Evolver, and apparently the Virus TI (though it seems that you are the only one who has a problem with its amazing, rich sound).

Please don't answer because I'm frankly done with you. But for your own benefit do ponder the idea that you are so obsessed with the perceived flaws of your synths that you can't actually enjoy them.

I have to say Largo seems to have its own character that sets it apart from other plugins. And although I'm not into the music that demonstrates it, imagining those same sounds in other ways is not too hard. Quite nice! I think the only reasons my GAS has not responded to it is the price and the fact I've somehow missed every blow out sale on it. But GAS is GAS and it's probably better that I have.

Opinion on Largo: Like the sound, not a fan of the GUI or the way it handles patch browsing.

Every few months, I load up Reaper, and load Terratec Komplexer in it. Just did that yesterday. I definitely prefer the sound over Largo's. But, what can you do? 32-bit only. Has a CD copy protection, which doesn't work in any 64-bit Windows, so you need a cracked version to run it, and it has some bugs. The only way I can run it is in Reaper, which has a 32-bit bridge. It sounds fantastic, just like the older Waldorf stuff, but, you can't really use it on modern machines.

It's even still sold by some Ebay shops. Man, how cool would it be if some hax0r (i.e. coder) would pick it up, modify it so that it doesn't CD check anymore, or even do a 64-bit version of it. Won't happen, I know, but, such a shame that it was discontinued. Best thing I ever tried in software.

I have no idea what is Wonderbread, but I'm pretty much convinced Virus is one of the best synths.

Yes, it does alias. And analog synths sound noisy and distorted, by that measure the best sounding synth must be something like Serum running with maximum oversampling, the cleanest possible sound.

As for Largo, I don't use it much but I do use it every now and then for some "special" sounds, mostly pads and sfx/atmospheres kind of stuff. It tends to sound thin and shrill but with some clever programming and amybe post-processing you can pull off some inetersting and unique textures. Definitely worth 29 dollars I paid for it.

serum also alias, actually i find aliasing enhence the sound in many case.. but often with audiorate modulation and saturation it sound like shit when it get noticeable (sometimes can be desired)
now i use 96 khz it make noticeable difference on lot of plugins ( reducing the use of oversampling / multiple real time sample rate convertion is also a bonus ) and by using filters around 20khz on many tracks that may benefit from it you can even lower aliasing if you want before going back to 44.1
