I have a weird...or not so weird question. I have an un-activated copy of Cubase Pro...maybe 9, or could be 10. If I activate it, what version will it be?

in an email today from the head honcho

Offline activation (coming soon)

We know that in some special circumstances, you might not be able to connect the computer on which you run your Steinberg software to the internet, and very soon we will provide the ability to check out a license for a period of one year. You will be able to do this either by temporarily connecting your computer to the Internet, checking out the license, and then disconnecting again, or if you prefer, you will be able to use the Internet connection on another computer to generate a check out license that you can install on the offline machine.

(Unfortunately) the version that you bought.

Hmm ok, this is kind of good for me. I just activated it...it was an older license (Cubase Pro 10). And it instantly got replaced by Cubase Pro 11. I wonder if since I just activated it, it might go to 12 when that gets released based on their own statement:

" any Cubase 11 license activated after November 9, 2021 can be updated to the corresponding Cubase version (Cubase Pro 12"

It just got activated as Cubase 11.

"Customers who activated a product shortly before the release of a newer version are eligible for a free Grace Period update to the new version." https://o.steinberg.net/en/support/grace_period.html

Sorry for the wrong info then... I wonder what the explanation for that is though.

Now if I just could find that Cubase 1 license I never activated...

It's little known, but this has been Steinberg's policy for years. I'm not sure what the first elicenser Cubase was, but if you bought it but never activated it, you'd get Cubase 11 today and 12 next year.

Almost. Check viewtopic.php?p=8263137#p8263137.

Thinking about it... I remember that this "happened" with Cubase AI to me once. I got a version of Cubase AI 9 (that's what it said on the card with the redeem code), and when I activated it, it became Cubase AI 10. I thought that was a thing which is specific to Cubase AI, not in general to Cubase.

Good stuff. :)

Read the full text of my post, take the words in context with each other.
I did. Still don't understand. Just because kev2525 didn't get what he wants (or, rather... thinks he doesn't get what he wants, because, AFAIK, there hasn't been an announcement of Cubase 12's feature set yet), it is not an update? Or, do you mean that you don't get a statement/update about new features?
Cubase 12 has been announced, but this means we miss a 0.5 update(I assume) . The feature I want (better midi controller implementation) was announced last year sometime and to date there hasn't been a single update from Steinberg. So I wonder if they are sacrificing developer time on changing the licensing system at the expense of DAW Workflow improvements. Cubase 11 was released in November 2020 which means by the time 12 is released more than 1 year will have passed. That's a really long time for a major DAW to have zero improvements. As I've stated I love mixing in Cubase, but as a creative tool for generating ideas it falls far behind Ableton and for Workflow it's beginning to lag Studio One. So I really hope Cubase 12 can deliver the goods.

I also wished Steinberg was more open with their users and engaged to find out what they really want and need. Nobody asked for Squasher, but everyone wants better implementation of quick controls. So what do we get? Squasher. Its nice, but yeah... That's dev time that could have gone to features the community had asked for. Track freezing of more than one track and being able to bind them to a macro is also a top feature request for years. And the macro system is genius, but clunky compared to S1. I hope they upgrade that in 12. They need to create a way to share macros like S1 via a the hub. Anyway, great program and I hope it stays that way, but the competition is strong in this segment and innovation and progress are the name of the game..

Skipped a few pages so this might already have ben covered, but...

according to marketing laws (in Sweden, but as Sweden and Germany are both in the EU, I assume it's the same), if the offer is reasonable, the seller needs to stick to it. In other words, you can claim the free upgrade, as you bought it in good faith during the time period of the faulty message.

You can definitely ask them, and, I wouldn't be surprised if they'd give you a grace period upgrade at goodwill.

I find it rather strange to see people mention 'workflow' as though it's objective. You want Cubase to be Ableton, many of us _really_ do not.
SB catering to y'all has meant some broken workflow for me.
"Nobody asked for Squasher", well, I sure didn't, but this is exactly catering to the EDM way o' life.

So is it official that there'll be no 11.5 version?
