Is there any reason you don´t use the Fruity Limiter??
For bread and butter stuff it´s already more than capeable of...
"Only love affairs can show you what you already have." :D

Fruity Limiter (Comp) is my "bread an butter", but you can "hearing" around

Maximus sounds better, but nor easy to handle (treshold? ratio?)

COMPassion, swiss army knife of compressors.
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

Everyone is just gonna list every compressor ever made. You should probably specify your needs.
Yeah. too broad. I'm not going down that endless rabbit hole of a gazillion compressor posts. I'm out.

"Bread and Butter" could mean "I don't wanna think about the settings" or it could mean "the thing I reach for every time no matter the source", so yeah that could mean any compressor depending on the individual.

OP did add low cpu as a requirement tho.

I would ask myself "Is it low cpu, low/zero latency, is it easy to dial in and is it flexible enough to get you in the ball park quickly on almost anything?". So that's what I listed, for me anyway.

So much stuff out there that it is a minefield and there is a huge burden of knowledge on people, veterans probably forget that.

More important question is "do I know how to use a compressor?". Learning how to use a compressor effectively takes years, so picking a versatile product to stick with is a good strategy.

I try to avoid compressors as much as possible, they often do more harm than good.
Otherwise... LA2A compressors are actually the best bread and butter compressors. No matter which manufacturer, Waves, Softube etc. they are all good.
On the bus/group there are certainly some special compressors that are better e.g. the SSL G-Bus or some of the Plugin Alliance bus-compressors, there I would not use an LA2A..

I'm sorry but imo, it should not take years to learn how to use a doggone compressor.

That's not what I said. It takes years to learn how to use a compressor effectively. It takes a few minutes to learn what the controls do.

Someone famous once said "It takes ten years to learn how to use a compressor". That's what I'm pointing out.

You mean those comps that start digitally farting at low attacks?

overall best? whatever.

for me there is definitely a 'bread and butter' compressor because it's ergonomically elegant and clear to use.
It's transparent, and it is very efficient. No wondering, no guessing. The brand name is VSL, both of the Vienna Suite versions. I use other things for effect, 'warmth'. My go-to there is IKM VC-670.

maybe Voxengo Marquis

"bread & butter" is a vague term but in the context I think of it, I'd call UHe Presswerk my choice for a bread & butter compressor. it's more like bread & butter with sprinkles and cinnamon. I'd prefer the sprinkles and cinnamon options over just having butter.

The free reaper comp is fine for almost anything. I use waves C1 all the time for standard duty. The Standard Cubase compressor is just fine. The free Melda Compressor is fine. The ones that come in BitWig are fine. For bread and butter compression duties there are millions of options. Your daw probably has one that's useful for all your standard needs.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.
