It's time for REASON 3 beta testing ...

The thing is, it's not going to be. The makers have said it, and I've seen no indication that they were kidding. Wishing won't change it, and threats on the Props boards don't work either. (There have been a few, yes. So instead of agonizing yet again over something that just ain't a-gonna happen, why not work with what we've got? It's pretty good as it stands. Not perfect. But pretty good.

I love Reason, its the most enjoyable tool I use for making music and the matrix step sequencer is so wonderful and simple to use. I can program new sounds on Subtractor and get groovey samples on the awsome NN-XT. The Redrum drum computer is so good for creating drum patterns. One thing though I wish it could do was record audio and load vsti's. It would be great to have Korg's legacy PolySix bass sounds running on the Matrix step sequencer but I guess CPU load is a big problem as Reason is CPU friendly on its own.
In version 3 I want to see...............
1. Vsti Compatibility
2. Audio Recording Compatibility
If this could happen then I could stop pissing about with Cubase which is so CPU hungry and use my favourite music making tool to the full and get more inspiration

What's so Kickass about it? The way I see it, VST is kicking Rewire Ass in terms of usability and functionality. Rewire is just a hassle. Why use two sequencers to do what one can do.fractalism wrote:the propellerheads propriatary kickass technology...
That's just silly.fractalism wrote:but I guess that only normal ppl would even think of using reason in rewire or as a sketchpad or even exporting stuff out as wav for sequencing in other hosts...that would mean having to use ones brain!
You might not have noticed this, but I think people who "need" VST have already taken your advice. That might explain why there's so little talk about Reason around here...usually. Nobody is sitting around waiting for the Props to release some new synth and a new way to route virtual cables. When Reason 3 comes out, those interested will take a look, if it's worth having, they will have it, if not, they will continue to use whatever it is they're using now.fractalism wrote:If you need VST then get a vst host and if you need a solid and stable softstudio then try out reason...Easy!

Yeah, whatever... Steinberg has gone on record, for years, insisting that they would NEVER implement ACID style timestretching in SX. Now in both SX and Nuendo 3 they have changed their tune and added this feature. Not much of a surprise considering that just about every other Host out there now has this built in. They seemed to have realized that rhetoric is one thing and being competitive is another.Meffy wrote:The thing is, it's not going to be. If and when the Propellerheads start to see their sales drastically drop off and see a connection to a certain lack of features being resonsible... they too, IMO, will change their tune.

Could be. But I don't see that happening in the near future. If the devs change their minds, okay. I wouldn't refuse to buy a VST-enabled Reason with audio in. But I'm not counting on it, and am quite satisfied with it the way it is. Version 3 will bring more improvements; what, I can't guess yet, but I've never yet been let down by the Props. If and when the Propellerheads start to see their sales drastically drop off and see a connection to a certain lack of features being resonsible... they too, IMO, will change their tune.
Wishful thinking is okay -- to some extent it's essential to daring to reach farther -- but when it begins to contend with firm realities for brainspace it can easily become counter-productive and lead to frustration.
It's a big world. There's room for lots of kinds of music software. :-) Reason's just one program, not the world.

P.S.: Okay, I admit it. Reason IS the world. But the rest of my statement stands.

Right then....
I've held back from any discussions here but while I would love VST support in Reason (I have v2.5) I reall ydon't think the Props should provide it. Reason is what it is, a rock solid limited soft studio. I love Reason but I don't remember the last time I fired it up.
I have moved on (to Orion Platinum & VSTi's) but Reason has it's place in music technology. If I had never started playing with a friend's Reason then I would never have got back in to this after doing stuff on hardware in the 90s. It might not be the most opened ended app but it rockc for newb-benginners.

Wouldn't mind more devices a bit. :-) But too many would be as bad as too few, IMO. It's a balance.AD80 wrote:But more devices added more frequently would be a big improvement.
I don't mind the Props' slow pace. I much prefer a carefully engineered, well-designed piece of software to a buggy, troublesome one. I think speeding up the tempo of development would risk the quality of Reason.
I understand your impatience and hope you don't get frustrated. Stick with it and see. If you switch to other software, that's okay. Everyone has to pick what suits them best. But make the decision based on what the software actually does, not how it fits expectations.

Could be. But I don't see that happening in the near future.. Its always a ridiculus wait with no new info from them and I'm sick of it. Thats why I'm waiting impatiently to see what R3 brings. If its not massive then I'm getting rid of it. I'm sure as hell not waiting for R4 in 2008 for things that they didnt include in R3. I definitely dont think VST support is the answer. But more devices added more frequently would be a big improvement.
I don't know... I kind of like software that doesn't have updates every five seconds(that does not include bug fixes mind you). It sort of gives me a chance to fully exploit the programs potential. For example: Reason does not have an additive synthesizer built in to it, however, because of this I came up with a rather clever way of doing additive synthesis with the NN-XT.
And,(different subject) I don't know what the big deal is with Reason not having VST support. I know I wouldn't want to use Reason as a VST host. The sequencer is not that great, and you cant record audio tracks in reason. I find it much more functional to use Reason with another host(DP4) via Rewire. Most all of the other multi track software hosts have rewire support too.

I dissagree. I dont like the NN19 but it doesnt bother me that its sitting there in the drop down menu. If you dont wanna use more devices then just dont use them. Let it sit there. But if you need something and its not there, now we have a major problem.

That's your prerogative, of course. But recall that every added device takes dev-hours away from other things. It's a zero-sum game; for X to gain, Y must suffer.AD80 wrote:I dissagree.
The trick is to balance X and Y without forgetting that Q and T and V might be important too. Everyone will have to decide for him- or herself whether they think the balance was handled right.
