I go over why and some options for buying better gpu's than the average cheap ones.
I use the gtx 960 as a baseline.

And by the way, the reason I added this information is that you don't try to push a gtx 960 too hard with old games. Some older games barrage the gpu with many images loaded as textures. In turn those textures are part of larger images, made into a grid so that they correspond to a integer switch system, it's very hard on a gpu - Because though you cannot "see" the other images thay "have" been processed by your gpu. This includes, in the case of rpg's armor sets, glove sets, skin tone sets (gray scale, with the ability to add color).

The list goes on, though they designed these things years ago with the intention of making everything faster and more readily available, they did not consider using "only what is necessary". The strain is too high on resources. You will find very quickly that your GPU's ability to then process sophisticated math becomes hampered because your shaders have burnt out. Some of them will cease to function, it's not the end of the world, but some of the games that are designed for newer gpu's that have more shaders (using effects instead of images to create the illusion of reality) will stop displaying correctly.

The need for these shaders is often cumulatively due to the need for shadows, reflection, light flares, maps, and objects in the virtual sky above; like a sun or its rays (and the 3d entailed geometry).

Use a seperate old beater pc for such things, play newer games and preserve your investment! It's My best advice to you.
