Volcano is a great sounding and flexible filter, I think some people (me included) just don't click with the UI- something like UVI Shade offers a more traditional paradigm for modulation etc (and is fully scalable to any size for the 4K crowd ;-))
...and it f**ks up my graphics card :ud: UVI Shade I'm taking about.

How is it “better”?
I tested it and skipped on it and use volcano constantly.
It has more filters so what? You know how many Melda MWobbler has? Its even better. And you can load it into MXXX and its even more better

This is an insta purchase for me. I’ve been using Volcano since version 1. I couldn’t be happier getting this update to bring it up to speed with the other Fabfilter FX.

Yeah for long suffering Volcano users this is just a welcome update; the last update to 2 must be ten years ago.

I also use the Drop but Volcano gets my vote for quick filter mangling with an envelope follower, but it really shines with all the phasing and flanging style stuff you can do with it with the routing and mix knob; very easy to set up on the fly. Great for impromptu sound design that need to be tuned and you don't want skip through presets but you also don't wanna go down an endless plugin chain of tweaking. Need spacey or whacky drums or percussion? Done. Need to make a boring pad interesting? Done. It's just light and quick when you need it to be which is often what you want from a filter plugin.

Volcano and say GHz Tiltshift can get you a long way on very little gas.

Yeah! Long time Volcano user here too and I'm so glad to finaaaaaaally see it updated. Funnily I've created a thread few weeks about exactly about this: why Volcano 2 haven't been updated so so so long. Checked and done now!

Very happy with the update. Not sure neither where that criticism is coming from, but whatever I guess we all have our opinions... Nonetheless, personally I think this (very long overdue) update is pure gold and very solid. Happy Volcano user here :D

Don't sleep on the presets. There are a few hidden gems there, ready setup for your mixing tasks. Check the 'Basic' folder. You have a quick setup of BPF, HPF, LPF and Notch where I've already routed an Envelope Follower that you get instant control over and an LFO.

There's also two unique panning presets where you get to pan things by variable frequency offset (ala Boz Digital Pan Knob) and one with phase offset.. also both have a built in control for delay difference panning. These together allow you to pan stuff "behind your head" (set one slider positive and the other negative) and all kinds of weird stuff.

Finally there are the two EQ presets I mentioned. They sound absolutely unique in the world of equalizers and in my opinion are very useful and musical. The one in Series is a lot more brutal than the one in Parallel. No need to mess with the XY controls though.. just grab a dot and move it around.

Volcano 3 is also a great kick drum creator due to it's self oscillating filters. Insert a white or pink noise source and then hook up any MIDI note source to Volcano 3 and start creating kicks and blips/percussion with the "Kick Maker" and "Kzit Maker" presets in the 'MIDI Triggered' folder.

I'm not done testing it, it's just my first impression. Might still pick it up if the added sales discount is good enough. But the main reasons are that Shade has more "interesting" filter types for sound design. The modulation in Shade is extremely fun and I'm not the biggest fan of how Fabfilter handle it and I do prefer the work flow in Shade a bit. And also I just love the sound of the filters in Shade (I think they are from Falcon?). Just sound really good to me. I tried Volcano and Shade on the same source and ran a few presets through them and... well I just like Shade better I think.

could you please go a bit more in detail why Shade is superior to you. Im drawn between those two for some new creative plugin and its hard for me to decide 🙈

I just did, probably while you were typing. But I am really not fully decided yet, just first impressions. I really dig the different filter styles in Volcano though.

Yes, I tested both side by side as well. both sound great but I prefer the way Shade works and found the modulation more easier to apply and understand (I just don't click with the UI on Volcano) and I like that it can be any size. Shades seems to have more filter types and very steep curves, but I am not saying that is better, I haven't gone deep enough for that.

Disclaimer, I have nothing by Fabfilter and almost everything by UVI so I was probably going to find it easier to get around! If I was already a Fabfilter user I may have a different opinion!

I wonder if we wait a few days this will also be in the BF sale or will it be excluded?

For a sec I thought I could get it for €36 IIRC, but that was with all the suggested purchases included. Once I unticked the option to buy every Fabfilter product I don't own, the price went up to almost €50 IIRC.
(I'm gonna wait for a BF deal, sorry Fabfilter, I have to economize)
