BONES wrote: Fri Nov 19, 2021 12:30 am This just shows the stupidity of your position - "backwards and forwards" is not up/down, either, so it' snot like one makes any more or less sense than the other. OTOH, it definitely makes less sense to make everything scroll vertically on a landscape oriented screen. But the important thing is that when you use the scroll wheel, the page you are looking at scrolls.
Just as an aside, do you realize just how vulgar and belligerent you are? I can't be the first person who has told you this. But still, you persist...

So Mr. Smarty Pants, moving your mouse wheel forwards (on a Mac and most tablets) corresponds to scrolling down on your screen. NOT scrolling left or right. So just stop and admit when you are wrong. Or keep being an ass and embarrassing yourself.
BONES wrote: Fri Nov 19, 2021 12:30 am If that was the only means of interacting with the computer then, yes, it would get very tiring, very quickly. OTOH, when I am busy doing something non my left monitor with the mouse and I need to open Action Centre quickly, then a quick swipe on the right edge of the right monitor and a push of a button on screen is much less disruptive than moving the mouse across two 27" screens, pressing a couple of buttons and then moving my mouse back to what I was doing.
Right, so we should put battery-sucking, weight-adding touchscreens on all laptops in case the ALL MIGHTY BONES needs to reach over and press a button on his touchscreen laptop.
BONES wrote: Fri Nov 19, 2021 12:30 am It's about options and Windows 11 has taken away more options than any version of Windows ever, making it more and more like macOS, which is a terrible, terrible thing.
Yes, along with global warming and the COVID pandemic, it's a terrible, terrible thing.
BONES wrote: Fri Nov 19, 2021 12:30 am That's not the reason, the reason is that if they did, it might impact iPad sales and they'd much prefer you buy two computing devices from them than just one.
Steve Jobs specifically mentioned arm fatigue (and battery life) as the reason why Apple doesn't put touchscreens on its laptops. This was before the iPad had even been released.
BONES wrote: Fri Nov 19, 2021 12:30 am Except that everything on Start is "out of sight" until I need to access it. That's the whole f**king point of it.
Just give up. You're making no sense.

Who knows? That's the point (why you shouldn't rely on horizontal scroll to navigate your apps). :)

Has anyone in the UK had the Win 11 update yet ?

Windows update says my machine in OK to run it, but no offer of the update.

You can download the ISO and upgrade manually if you want to. If you mount the ISO you can install as an upgrade from Windows 10 rather than a fresh install. There is info at the bottom of the page about this (expand the 'Before you begin" section - Installation instructions (ISO): )

I always loved that multi quote thing. :D

It's like "Hi. I disagree with every single word you say, and like to quote it out of context, so it doesn't make any sense at all anymore, which makes my point even more valid.".

Bad style. And rude.

Post

Why? Are you too dumb or lazy to go back and re-read a post so you can understand the context? Or just too dumb to understand, full-stop?
Gadget Fiend wrote: Fri Nov 19, 2021 7:58 amJust as an aside, do you realize just how vulgar and belligerent you are? I can't be the first person who has told you this. But still, you persist...
It's called honesty, you should probably learn to appreciate it.
So Mr. Smarty Pants, moving your mouse wheel forwards (on a Mac and most tablets) corresponds to scrolling down on your screen. NOT scrolling left or right.
That's a semantic argument. You just swapped the words "forwards" and "backwards" with "up" and "down". It doesn't change the fact, which is that you use the scroll wheel to scroll the page. Left/right or up/down, you are doing the same thing and getting the same result. You don't sit and stare at the screen wondering how you are going to scroll the page, you move the scroll wheel and the page scrolls. Until you attempt to scroll, you'd be unaware that it was different. It is not something you have to adapt to, or even get used to. It does exactly what you expect/need/want it to, just not in the way you expect the first time. It's something you see for the first time and go "that's different", not "holy f**k! How am I ever going to be able to use my scroll wheel again!?!"
Right, so we should put battery-sucking, weight-adding touchscreens on all laptops in case the ALL MIGHTY BONES needs to reach over and press a button on his touchscreen laptop.
I bet my laptop weighs less than yours and it has two screens (only one has touch, though). But what you're saying is that because you don't need it, the rest of us can go and get f**ked. So who here is being a self-centred arsehole? ("Almighty" is one word, BTW.)

Of course the real hilarity of your position is that Windows 11 is the most clearly touch-friendly version of Windows ever and you can't even see it. You haven't noticed the stupidly large spacing between icons in Start or the spacing of lines in all the drop-down menus that are obviously designed to be easier to use with fat fingers. It's like Win10 is in Tablet Mode, only you can't turn it off.
Steve Jobs specifically mentioned arm fatigue (and battery life) as the reason why Apple doesn't put touchscreens on its laptops.
I don't know if you've seen any of the movies or read any of the biographies but Steve Jobs was a self-serving c**t who'd spout any bullshit he thought his audience would be dumb enough to swallow. If he said one thing, I would automatically think the opposite thing is probably closer to the truth and that usually turned out to be the case.

Man, you are SO angry and toxic that it's not worth winding you up to watch you foam at the mouth. Stay on Windows 10 for the rest of your life for all I care. You'll be just like the luddites who are still running XP. It's sad really.

I use the Ctrl+Shift+Escape k/b shortcut for that. Saves a step compared to Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then select Task Manager. I pretty much always have an instance open to keep an eye on memory usage etc. Then it is just a click away to maximise it.

Of course you should upgrade. The corners are rounded. Its beautiful.

I know you are being facetious. But the rounded corners on windows and dialogs does give Windows 11 an improved appearance compared to the overly stark and squared-off look of Windows 10.

But in BONES addled mind (he clearly suffers from one or more severe emotional and behavioral disorders) he would say that Microsoft, like Apple, is "changing things just to be changing things." This after BONES claimed that Microsoft collects untold quantities of data on its users' behavior and thus can't possibly make a glaring UI mistake like the egregious error that is the Windows 8/10 start menu (or I should say start "screen" because that more clearly indicates the monstrous size of the f$ck up).

Jesus, how often are you accessing the Task Manager? According to BONES, Microsoft has caught up with Apple and there is no need to frequently mess with system settings and the like in the modern Windows experience.
