new Mac mini m1 keep, or return?

Over all I like the thing, BUT......

Sometimes when I start it up it does its thing and my display turns to "snow". I restart and its fine. its done this 4 times since yesterday (when I got it )

Mini issue, or display issue?

My display has an audible hum. Is it the mini, or the monitor? The mini is so quiet that I can hear the hum, was it always there??

Its an old display with a dvi input. Im using an hdmi to dvi cable so maybe that's the issue?

Im also now getting noise in my studio monitors. Not sure if it was always there or not (mini is so quiet Im hearing lots I didn't before)

The only other thing is I also have a new rme ucxll. I don't think this has anything to do with my issues.

Send back the mini? New display time? Something else?

Sounds like some kind of coil whine from your display. I'd try a different display before you go and send back your mac.

It’s liveable I just wanted to know if it was a max issue or display issue. I can live with display issue but if it’s on the Mac end of things I’ll send it back and get another

would still suspect the display - sounds to me like you've got the perfect excuse to buy yourself a nice big usb-c/thunderbolt monitor in the black friday sales

Had to replace my old Cinema display because of this, it’s the display and it’s time for retirement.

That's on desktop PC machine, it worked great and at one point my monitors started buzzing only when my screen was turned on, it was time to go, got some nice cheaper Samsung one, couldn't be happier.

I'd say, test the display somewhere else., If it works, return the Mac. It's stupid having to replace a perfectly functional piece of hardware just because the computer "doesn't like it". It's the kind of consumerism we should avoid.

What monitor to buy?

HDMI to DVI is a passive converter - it'll be the monitor itself ( if it's DVI only I'm guessing it's kind of old?)

the Dell 38" ultrawide runs nicely over usb-c if you want to go big.....

so your logic is that every new computer should support every ancient legacy device back to the dawn of time? Guess you're also annoyed the new mac's don't have VGA and ps/2 ports.....

Ok update:

Display still makes noise even when mini is turned off, and display is on and unplugged from mini.

Monitor is noise. It may have been noisy all along and I’m noticing now that the mini is so quiet, or it coincidently started making the noise.

So, new monitor time. What should I buy?

I’d prefer to stick with hdmi and keep the usb4 open for possible hard drive.

I believe I’m limited to 4k @60hx.

I have no idea about 4K uhd, resolutions, pixels, etc.

Just wanna replace my 24” Samsung (2004).

Mini is used for logic, web surfing, email. I don’t watch Tv or movies (the odd YouTube ) nor do I film edit or photo edit (for context in recommendations )

I’m open to wider and bigger if it makes sense

Not all HDMI to DVI adapters work! Apple itself recommends a USB-C to DVI adapter. However... this Youtuber seems to have found one that works. Not very expensive, so I would test it first. Unfortunately only in German, but the recommended adapter is from CableCreation and can be found on Amazon.

My "logic" is that if a piece of hardware still works, there's no reason to trash it. There are plenty of "new" computers that don't force you to trash all the peripherals you have in use.

I bet you are one of those that goes out shouting in favor of measures against climate changes, but buy himself a new smartphone every year.
