I watched some of it on youtube a few nights ago (not all) and planned to post it in one of the tracker based threads I created, but forgot about it when I went out after midnight for a cycle in the dark moors of the coastal stretch.

I have most of these tracker programs on floppy, securely contained disk in my loft in box. The very first program I loaded up was the grey Sound Tracker as shown in the video after I had bought an Amiga 500 from a guy in the RAF. They were copies of course, but I had no idea what a tracker was at the time back in 1993. But the primary reason I wanted an Amiga was to make music with. I knew what the Amiga was capable of sound wise as my friends had one, to play games on. I don't know if the video above shows any sample editors but there are many on the Amiga such as Aural Illusion which was quite advanced for it's day.

Surprisingly it actually helped.

Back then I soldered my own passive COVOX DAC from a printer plug, a 3.5mm jack chassis part, a handful (or two) resistors and a small capacitor I had laying around.

Being passive, it needed an insane amount of amplification, but it worked! It added sound to Doom (or was it just Wolfenstein?) on the old laptop that could not be extended with a sound card. And was great fun ofcourse.

I picked out some of my favourite Amiga games earlier this year or at least the ones that had the best graphics and music. There is a gallery of them on my site here. Turrican 2's music is great to listen to... and the game is too. There is actually a free PC game you can download called Hurrican that's a modern equivalent of the old Turrican released 14 years ago. https://www.winterworks.de/project/hurrican/

I actually did a DIY project which I think was included on CU Amiga magazine or maybe it was Amiga Format... back in 1996, which involved soldering together an inferred sensor, which allowed you to control TV's. Basically, using the TV's remote control and utility software to record the data and firing it back out. Connecting it vie the Amigas Joystick ports.. was something like you would have seen attached on the old Atari 800 XL. When I was 7 / 8 years old, I used to have a game called Mr Robot, where you could design your own levels to play on using the builtin construction kit. It was like a painting program that moved with lots of animations.

Before the Amiga I had a C64 and always bought the 64er Magazin. It also had lots of DIY projects and listings (basically code) to type off. There was one really cool project that involved cutting a 5,25" floppy disc in a specific way, position a credit card in a way that the magnetic strip aligns with the discs opening. After typing in the pages long Hexadecimal code line by line I was able to run the program in order to read the content of the credit card. The disc motor started spinning around, the header moved and made a lot of noise while all kind of colors flashed on the screen... until a text appeared: april's fool! ...man I was pissed

An interesting watch. So much talent in the many groups back then. Much of that music will never been known to the mainstream.

I got my start in mod trackers not by keygens or pirating (as the documentary persues), but because I wanted to develop games for the PC and wanted a sound engine. I found one called SEAL (Synthetic Audio Library) that came with some s3m songs as examples.

The music amazed me. 25 years later, and a degree in Computer Science, I still haven't developed any games, but I am so glad to have found one of my real passions -- MUSIC!

I have just started to go down this hole with a raspberry Pi 400 running pimiga 1.5 with Octomed. I just skipped over this entire phase of music production. I went from midi on early computers (SE30 and Atari STE) then to VSTS with Cubase 4 VST. Missed the whole tracker thing in between. It is a great video for a late newcomer such as myself.

OpenMPT is free if you want to have a go at trackers and relive the past. Just saying.

Haven't gotten around to playing around with it much, but looks cool.

A couple of gems you should listen (shown in the documentary): "Future Brain" by Purple Motion and the great "Point of Departure" by Necros. Both in www.modarchive.org

The first music program I learned was Jeskola Buzz. It's a relatively modern tracker with VST support and modular routing. At some point Jeskola had a HD crash and lost the source code to Buzz, so when development came to a halt I switched over to a standard DAW. I started using C Muzys because that was free on the CM cover disc.

The Buzz generators could have a really special and musical sound to them. Simplistic but organic. A warm digital if that makes sense.

Theres the youth of mine, in video format. Oh OctamedPro with 14bit samples and MIDI, that was something cool - unfortunately the MIDI devices I had were mostly crappy...
