i'm looking for the synth (instrument) used that kicks in right before the chorus at about 1:58 and continues until 2:54... and it comes in before that and later...

Sounds like dozens of PWM String presets to me:
http://www.panicnow.net/~marco/es1_tarnce_strings.mp3

Of course you never get "exactly the same" sound but I recommend any substractive synth that has one or more saw oscillators, apply detune/chorus effects to taste!
