How do you create transition sounds? I don't mean the usual reverb-reverse things, I'm more looking for creative ways of making distorted or glitchy effects (stock or free plugins only). And most importantly, what are you using as starting point, samples, midi...? What is your process?

Something I do is copy the project over to a new file that I can experiment with and not accidentally save over my main project. Then I go wild. I could get a crazy tail happening on a note with a tape delay, reverb and lofi FX. Record that and import it back into my main project, reverse it, etc.

And I automate the crap out of everything so the track naturally slowly evolves - one big transition
