hey guys, so the drumstrip seems to be very well! i like the sound but i just dont get the gate, i normally use for GATE purposes my beloved fabfilter Gate but here i dont get the controls at all i also read the Manual but dont get it either :D

so here is a snare sample
Image

i set attack at very fast and release about halfwards and hold on 0
ok but i dont get the OPEN, CLOSE and RANGE knobs. they just dont work like i think?
i want my snare (to test) to get cut the tail faster than it is now, well a gate so, but what do i have to set to get the tail shortened? can someone help ? :)

Try turning down the release all the way, so the sound cuts off immediately. Then set the "open"-knob so that the snare hit exceeds that threshold causing the gate to open and sound to come through. Then set the "close"-knob a bit below to whatever threshold you want the gate to close again. It should sound pretty clicky now, so increase the release and maybe the hold to lengthen the time you want the gate to stay open. With the range knob you can control how much gain is reduced (if at 0 there is no gain reduction, so there should be no difference to the sound).

open and close is what db you want it to do those things (threshold)
attack/release is how fast
:ud:

thx guys hmmm im just testing it, i need to make some video somehow, i got now
Attack 0
Release 0
Hold 0
i can hear that it is now clicky! ok i know why and understand it, but now i wonder these
Range - i set it to max, and Close also to max
now the OPEN knob is determining how fast the tail closes. so i think this is what i want.

but then what is the point of Range and Close? im stupid here :D

The "open"-knob determines when the gate opens, the hold and release knob should determine how fast it closes. If you set open to -10db and close to -15db, that means once a sound hits -10db, the gate opens and lets sound come through. The gate stays open until it drops below -15db and then the gate will turn the sound off. Generally this is called hysteresis. For something like a snare, the "close"-value is not that useful, because it's very short. It's better to be controlled via the release. Try playing with it on the drum bus or on something with a lot of dynamic range, I think it will make more sense then. Also the "close" button only works if it's set below the "open" value.

The range knob sets a ceiling for the amount of db the sound is reduced by when the gate is closed. This is useful if you don't want the sound below the threshold to be turned off completely, but just reduced, a bit like a downward expander. Again not very useful on a snare. On the bus, try opening the gate all the way, you should not be hearing any sound. Now reduce the range knob to 0, the sound should be playing at regular level. If you increase the range by 10, the sound should be reduced by 10db. If you now reduce the threshold of when the gate opens, you should be hearing the sound at the normal level, but as soon as the gate closes, you will hear everything else play at -10db.

By the way, is this channel strip anything special?

I also just impulse bought it, but I am liking it quite a bit.
