I watched that video the other day... Iirc it was 5 multiband plugins in series just to get the perfect phase shift! Then he adds a 6th one but admits it sounds better without it. (Edit: no, it's was another video, the one called "complete psytrance bassline processing")

I do admire this kind of production perfectionism but I actually think his music sounded better 5-10 years ago. "Into The Void" is still a benchmark for quality psytrance sound for me.

Yeah, think he said he wasn't happy with production of that one and tried to make it work, maybe that's the thing, when production dictates your creative outcome, music suffers, there's perfect balance between adequate musical content and production, but it's miracle to step aside and find that.

I'm afraid that's how it is, unfortunately. His older stuff is special for me but the new tracks I don't like much. Yes, they sound louder and cleaner but something important is missing.

I watched that video where he said he wasn't happy with the mixing on that album. It's hard to believe that, but maybe he hears his own stuff not in the same way as we do

He’s perfectionst, that explains it, he would always find space for improvement, which is a good thing, but some stuff don’t need it to resonate better with listeners.

Boris Brejcha was expanding in one interview about feeling of the track in studio and on the floor, basically less and more separated elements would work nicely on the floor, but in his studio he felt track was lacking and not full enough, so maybe it’s that, he got deep taste of the floor and knew what would really work, what is easier to mix and so on… think he even expanded on some of it in this video, targeting music for different crowds and floors and etc.

I don't know, is this Psytrance? It's labelled Psytrance, I'm not good at today genres.

Anyway the track is not bad, like it....

Don't know anymore, I could tell from the first second that this was made by someone who is into classic/uplifting trance, than as thing progresses by someone who is also inspired by most thing trance including psy. I hope this doesn't become psy and hope this become trance again.

Hey there all psyfans. First time here, been scrolling thru all the pages in this thread and while doing so, i ended up with a question. First of all, i fell in love with this type of music not so long ago, about 2 years back.. So, i don't know nearly as much about the genre some of you do. Iv'e always loved various EDM genres(Yes, edm in general, not what some underground goliaths think about), from Dubstep back in 2008'ish till Psytrance as of now. About 1.5 years ago, i started pursuing music production as a hobby.. And right now, i think im little bit lost, because im starting to wonder, is it really Psytrance i like so much, or is it something else, since im also learning, i should look up the material which guides me the most. I never liked Goa, i love Astrix, i think triplets and offbeat is great, not better.. not worse than 1/16'th i'm just sayng that i've found so many people hating on triplet grid and offbeat, i have no idea why and what causes this, it might just be preference thing, but then again, why hate the other way around, be neutral. As of i think, Progressive/Tribal Psytrance is the genre i love so much, yet again, i'm still not sure. So i would love to ask some of your opinions. Im going to post some of my top favorite tracks which i admire so much.. and i'm hoping for any of you to guide me, what is it i'm looking for, is it really psy? Where do i fit in.

Cheers ;)

Hi, yes, this is is most definitely psytrance, more specifically a progressive variety of it.

Indeed, you may encounter some snobbery towards it from oldschool goa fans, or nightime/darkpsy fans, but well, you'll find such people everywhere, regardless of the genre there always will be people who think they know what is "true" something and what is not :)

Going by your videos I'd suggest you to check out also tracks by Ace Ventura, Liquid Soul, Symbolic, E-Clip, Estephano Haze, Shadow Chronicles, Bellatrix, Morten Granau, and also you may want to look up for progressive mixes by DJ Electric Samurai on youtube.

Btw I also can recommend psytrance production cources by Shadow Chronicles at Sonic Academy.

I use it quite a bit.

It's quite capable synth, has all the functionality needed to make most of the modern psy stuff and great base sound.

I have a couple of minor gripes, like the PM tends to sound a bit tame but you can use pre-FMed wavetables, add some PM and get decent hi-tech style leads, also I'm not a fan of the BP filters - not that they sound bad, just somewhat characterless and the resonance doesn't behave well if cranked up too much. But it's possible to find workable ranges.

It has a formant shift WT effect which is very cool for Virus-styule gated formant sequences. Also I particularly like its vowel filters and "talker" effect.

Overall I think it's on par with Serum, misses a bit of that ultimate hi-fi clarity but has a warmer and somewhat more muscial tone.

yes i feel the same with the pm, can be worked out with the choice of wavetable like you mention or using the 3 osc in cascade with pm modulation to get more harmonically rich timbre. the filters are maybe is weak point even if it can do the job..but yes the bp and hp are not my fav but i like the multi bp and peak one a lot for vowell sounds.
it s possible to make a nice Bp filter" to taste" by using the insert lp/hp part and a macro insteed of the filter section bps.

i don t know how to use the forman shift, can you give me some tips , i will try it again right now , i didn t use it much yet.

so far i think it s similar to serum like you mention but with a warmer timbre , it make me think a cross between serum and a virus in term of sound caractere. it s less thin sounding than serum and less razor sharp.

some of the fx are very good and well suited for psy as they can go easily in experimental theritory and can be used like part of the synthesis more than just like fx ,i mean just a saw into a filter going into the fx could lead to very well suited psy sonds, i think it s one of the big plus of rapid, the fx section used creatively and not just for usual delay verb phaser ect

it s also good for psy bassline but for best result i think its better to use a well suited saw multisampled into rapid and not wavetables
