For those unfamiliar with Dolby Atmos production, check out this vid:

I'm really interested in the sonic possibilities here, but not quite so enthusiastic about the $1000 price tag and mac-only environment, being a PC user.

I've played around a bit with Reaper's surround panner --- most likely I'm not doing it right, but it doesn't sound much different to left/right panning to my ears.

Any suggestions for spacial placement/panning plugins that might do a good job?

I'd really like to be able to produce deliverable interleaved WAV files for Atmos compatible releases - but from what I've gleaned so far it looks like that's only possible with the proprietory Atmos/Apple setup... and that's way beyond my means at this time  [please do correct me if I'm wrong]

So far... this looks pretty good: https://newaudiotechnology.com/products ... -designer/

various price points, €300 for a comprehensive package that would give multi-channel output routing...

In theory, that could be used to make an atmos deliverable by somebody with the right setup.

Thanks... have been getting "immersed" in the world of immersive audio--- seems there are quite a few options including free like ambisonics.

dearVR looks good, will check it out... shame no free demo.

I'm not sure what to make of it all really - the stuff in the dolby atmos video I posted above really does sound nice and genuinely 3D, even through normal headphones (which is all I have at the moment anyway). On the other hand, I checked out a few albums apparently mixed with Atmos... including Pearl Jam's latest offering, and to me it just sounds like good stereo placement and effects.

Guess I'll need to get my hands on something and play with it :)

Minde you that many popular DAWs like Ableton, Bitwig or FL Studio have not built in Atmos-support like Logic does. Or like Cubase or Pro Tools which at least do bussing of 5.1 or 7.1.4 routings. None of that Live. It does work through workarounds with fancy routing and Max4Live devices, but it's still very much in its infancy.

Also, beware that there is quite the difference between mixing in Atmos with an actual speaker set and mixing with headphones in the binaural version. Translation issues are still quite common. So what might have sounded "3D" on headphones might not work on an actual Atmos system. But we're getting there. Plenty of plugins and DAW features will be released next year in this domain.
