You definitely need to define what you're looking for. Any plug-in sounds "authentic" to its purpose, but if what you want are "emulations" of old gear, the best you get are approximations. And it's debatable if that's even desirable. Generic plug-ins are usually more flexible and better for beginners.

Exactly. That's a matter of a particular "sound" and personal taste. But that's when one already knows what to do, and knowledgeable about what's happening.

My Marantz 4 track with absolute certainty --my Microphone plug-in alone sounds just like me, and the Kurweil synth plugged into it sounds unbelievably authentic as well.

what does this mean? are you saying vsts are not real instruments? something either makes a sound or it is silent, a sound is real. do you mean as in a decent facsimile of a previously heard sound?
music is made, organising sounds in time. whether these sounds are made using pre existing known sounds or new unheard of sounds, the sound is real sound.
