Best thing is to study how actual strings work in terms of range. Left to right: Contrabass, Cello, Viola, Violin.
Sample libraries are really specific about range in 2022. Watch some YouTube about how to do this.
I always do strings case by case and layer often to reinforce sounds that are too bright or too dark.
Combine a Logic Pro string from the Factory library with an old school Roland string and run both thru a vintage reverb.

Ok thanks for that advice

For film type pads, the instant recommendation is Wavestation. Wavestate is even better but it's only in h/w currently (and I can't imagine there are any plans for a VSTi soon). But you can get the Korg Wavestation VSTi quite cheap and it's the classic film soundtrack synth. You get all the presets and all the samples from the whole Wavestation product history with addition of having a resonant filter (the original didn't), which makes it even more powerful than the h/w. Once you get past the archetypal Ski-Jam type rhythmic pad, you find the Wavestation was probably one of the best synths ever made for evolving pads and a perfect fit for films - you hear it all over loads of film soundtracks to this day.

It's strength is long evolving pads that are based on strings and vocals - you can morph strings into vocals - almost everyone has done that with the Wavestation at some point and it excels. Very good for horror type metallic and otherworldy sounds too.
