With so many analog synths instrument plugins around, I wonder what is the only synth (vintage or not) that is most versatile/general and useful to have in your arsenal for music production. One that you could use for all purposes. I am not familiar with their hardware counterparts, so it would be useful for me to know this. Of course, there are many special synths or sampler type plugins that do specific sounds, but I am asking from a typical synth point of view. I know, it is difficult to pick one, but imagine it from hardware point of view (most can only have one or two synths, sorry if you have more) and then suggest a software counterpart.

Pretty sure it has to be a poly synth, but no problems if there is a mention of a mono synth too. Emulations or sample-based, any type is fine.

Note: This is NOT about comparing plugins between plugin companies. So, let's avoid going into that debate, please.

If I ever want “analog” sounds from a VSTi, The Legend would be my first choice.

Oh, wait, you want “versatile”, etc.? Um, then my choice would instead be TAL Sampler. :hihi:

edit: On revision, I have no idea what you’re asking, or what you’re hoping to discover.

Viper.

Not an analog emulation though, but an emulation of a famous vintage synth so I think it fits. Definitely one of the most versatile synths among the emulations, can cover a lot of different sounds like the HW prototype

If stictly sticking to analoguesque sound, then Diva must be the most versatile.

Reaktor Blocks + Toybox expansion.

The sound is amazing. Sure, it takes a lot of patching to get anywhere, but I don't expect a very complex sound from an analog synth anyway.

Hmmm... difficult. VA or analog modelled? (I know, supposedly the same thing. But, I definitely would distinguish between synths which are explicitely analog modelled, and those which are "just" digital VA synths, like Spire.) Does VA include wavetable synths?

Does VA include wavetable synths
What is "analog wavetable" anyway? To me clearly wavetable synths are not analog synths in any sense ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They surely don't have VCO's, but, as we're talking about soft synths here anyway... ;)

RePro, Legend, Obsession, J-8…can’t decide.

If only one, it would have to be Diva.
(but best in their class for me would be Repro-1, J-8 and Model 72)

No doubt whatsoever: Synapse Audio Dune 3.

Why not Falcon then? ;)

I think the OP question generally relates to the usefulness of vintage synth emulations in modern production, like " does the "emulation" aspect has any value to those who never owned the original synth?"
