one brand for all sound sources seems reasonable to me. ...
Frankly, given that this month is a commercial synth month, I would say any modules are fair game, even commercial ones. This makes VCV powerful, but also doesn't help constrain your decisions :hihi:

I have two creations in the works, one limiting myself to instruo modules where possible, one limiting myself to Bogaudio FM-OP and NOISE for sound generation. I want to restrain myself in some way!
Wanna hear my opinion?
Go nuts! No prisoners! I just want to hear what you can cook up!

My opinion. First, you could really view VCV rack more as a DAW than a synth, since it contains and does so much.

I don't think you're under any obligation to restrict yourself to a limited set of modules. It is true that the available options provide extraordinary flexibility, but with any other synth with multiple generators there wouldn't be any question about using the full range of what is available (excepting the use of samples). That said, restrain yourself if it feels right to you. Limiting yourself to a single brand of generator modules seems like a reasonable place to land.

I'm using VCV, myself, primarily using Audible Instruments modules. I do have some other modules providing excitations for the Resonator module, and the basic VCO as a source for another sound. I may try replacing these with Audible Instruments sources, but I don't have any interest in limiting my use of utility modules for modulation, filtering, signal routing, and so on.

I think a challenging restriction might be to use one setup of say 10-15 modules, and only use sounds created from that one setup. I think it would be easier too, because you wouldn't be overwhelmed with too much choice.

The usual rules for samples and wavetables, and no more restrictions! This is VCV, it's your choice! :tu:

I have indeed been using VCV as my DAW for several OSCs now, with the Host modules allowing both the VST instruments and any other fx that are allowed (I've been adding just Kotelnikov and Loudmax on the Master). Thanks for the input! I think I'll go with the suggestion of using just one brand of sound source, and modulating, triggering, cv/octaving, quantizing etc with whatever works. In the end I don't think the rules are restricting me in what modules I choose to use.

This is an interesting idea, one could build a patch and copy and paste it for each instance. Unfortunately I don't think I have the CPU for this approach, I have to be careful to use the minimum modules necessary for each of my noises. If I had a beefier rig I might try it!

one brand for all sound sources seems reasonable to me. most synths we use here have more than one type of oscillator after all. omri cohen held a challenge a couple of months ago where you could only use vult, geodesics and core modules which was quite interesting to try and work with.
This is the approach I think I will take, Sound sources from one brand, and the rest is fair game.

Yeah rarely do my ideas ever make sense in real life.

Haha, NO, the VCV LOAD ON THE CPU rarely ever makes sense in real life! :borg:

Since I've never tried it before, I'm using Kontour, which is a Reaktor instrument that comes with Komplete. I assume it's alright to use a Reaktor instrument... it isn't sample-based as far as I can tell.

Reaktor instruments are fine - if, as you say they aren't sample based. And it does not look like Kontour is sample based, so... :tu:

I have decided to use AirWindows Vacuum Pro for my sins. We shall see how it works out.

You mean AIR Vacuum Pro ? Quite a bit different than AirWindows :)
