OK. I am wrong to worry.
Which developers are a safe bet for longevity.

Not yet, but the authorization servers are likely on borrowed time, and who knows when you'll next open a project and find that it no longer works.
I suppose you could live life assuming that none of your hardware will ever die and need replacing (invaliding the machine ID), and no other piece of software will ever require updates that might break things and require fixes, but that seems short sighted to me.
It also seems a little self-centered, since it ignores that no-one new can ever really come to the product, even with the zero-sum game of license transfers, license transfers work *today* but will they tomorrow?

Yes... when I switched to a M1-Pro MBP... now it will never work on my new computer.

You knew what you were doing when you upgraded to bleeding edge tech...
Apart from that, even if it ran with Rosetta2, you wouldn't use it.

No, and there is absolutely no reason to act insulted. Geist is not "dead". It's discontinued. It will be dead when you can't authorize it anymore, or when it stops working on every OS.
That's the thing with software. Noone can possible know what happens in the future. With all those one man, or small businesses, EVERYTHING can happen. That's why I buy plugins for what they are today, not what they may be in the future, because, I can't know what that will be.
I use lots of plugins which don't get updated anymore. They're not dead. They still work, and probably will continue to work. Yes yes, I know, when you use a OS, which reuires developers to nurse their plugins all the time, you're out of luck. Again, that's a decision that YOU take though.

i buy the plugins i want. and i use them, as long as they run (or as long as i remain interested in them). and if something no longer works, i find something new to play with. can't worry about what 'might be'... am too busy enjoying 'what is'....

I definitely am disappointed if a loved plugin doesn't work anymore. But, on Windows, it simply never happens... the only plugin I really mourn about is Terratec Komplexer, and that's 32-bit only anway, and the copy protection normally prevents it from being installed on anything but Windows XP. I think that's the worst copy protection I've ever seens on a plugin (CD check, WTF... what happens if you have several plugins which have a CD check?
).
Can't remember anything else which stopped working. There are plugins which are quite glitchy.
When I buy something, I buy it for what it is today. Again, I can't possibly know what happens in the future. Maybe the main developer gets a heart attack 5 minutes after I clicked the "Buy" button. Tough luck.

E-mu Proteus (original, not VX) stopped working after Vista for me.
Equally, but not sure exactly when, Windows changed their "class compliant standard" which only allows for one controller for same brand/model. Which is really short-sighted of them IMO. I find a controller I really like, I like to have two or three of them for simultaneous input.
(Currently have 2 VMK188+ and 2 E-mu xboard61.) And haven't been impressed altogether by newer controllers to replace them with.

You're not wrong. I run a new 16" Macbook Pro M1 Max. A few days ago I finally installed Parallels, and Windows 11 ARM. Very quickly I was playing Portal 2, a 32-bit x86 game, fullscreen at 2560x1440, with a smooth framerate, and no glitches. That's just crazy. Meanwhile all 32-bit Mac software has been useless since Catalina.

your point about 32-bit mac software is... it's been out-of-date since 2019? yes, that's why developers moved to 64-bit software. because tech moves forward... which is the whole point.teilo wrote: Fri Jan 14, 2022 12:06 amYou're not wrong. And yet Microsoft has maintained 32-bit compatibility … even on ARM.fisherKing wrote: Fri Jan 14, 2022 12:23 amyour point about 32-bit mac software is... it's been out-of-date since 2019? yes, that's why developers moved to 64-bit software. because tech moves forward... which is the whole point.teilo wrote: Fri Jan 14, 2022 12:06 amYou're not wrong. Just checked and apparently the 2003 version of Microsoft Money I run on Windows 10 will run on Windows 11 with a registry tweak!teilo wrote: Fri Jan 14, 2022 12:06 amYou're not wrong.
