Exactly , the only thing these so called new fm powehouses offer are a partial generator for operators and a couple of filters thrown in , but it's still phase modulation that does the heavy lifting and that alone is capable of some verry juicy and thumpy basslines .
Sure , mseg's are nice but I don't really care for them
I own a tg77 and there the addition of the new waveforms , true zero hz operators ( so the carriers are true waveshapers ) are the only thing that imho are of added benefit (and ofcourse the pcm waves as modulators ) .
Plogue ops7 lacks the 0 hz operators ( but so does the dx7 ) but is does have that Yamaha FM sound which no other plug provides .

When you say 'FM synthesizer' are we still talking phase modulation/distortion, or true FM, though?

Not even sure what this would be? Analog FM?
Check out the Norand Mono synth.

Bazille @ 96khz is pretty good

Lovely synth! I hope they make a poly version...

FM should always have some aliasing imo. Clean FM sounds cursed.

Early Aphex , cylob , good old detroit techno all done with basic yamaha fm synths .
Adding a filter or a plethora of effects won’t make it more capable .
Yeah... Lot's of people did it with a Mini or an Odissey. I wonder why do we need more than that (sarcasm)

I also wonder why Yamaha launched later the TSY77/TG77/SY99 (the latest one being one of the best synths ever made, IMO), and later the FS1R (another great synth, that I look forward to get emulated). They certainly didn't know anything about the subject. As a matter of fact. I don't understand why so many pick the (quite inferior) DX7, when they could emulate something like the FS1R. Only explanation is the latter would be much more difficult to emulate.

"Just" a few things :hihi: (and the fact you can mix FM and PCM elements, and use up to four elements, and filters, and effects... "just" a few other things). :hihi:

FYI , I was talking about phase modulation FM , no idea why you bring up the oddisey-Mini
I have a TG77 and know it inside out , I just didn't bother to mention every feature .
Phase offset , multiple feedback , and 0hz are imho the most important features which opens a lot of possibilities ( true pulswidth etc..)

And I just added "a few other things", to further expose the differences between SY FM series and the DX7. And I forgot to say we have more FM algorithms, and the possibility to create our own algorithms. Like you, I also have a TG77 (and a SY99). And I have been looking for an FS1R. Why? Maybe because I never considered a DX7 to be satisfactory.

Apparently, neither you.

back to the original question, my answer would be: "no, I'm still trying to figure out subtractive synthesis"
