If you want to be a weird loner who’s social interaction is typing messages on music forums, you can totally not give a sh!t what anyone thinks. On one hand, it’s quite liberating, but it is also sad and fairly lonely.
pssst you can have both ;)

Same, how much you payin' for me to care like that.
when I was a performing seal, if I cared about the performance well enough other people thought well of it, and in some situations an audience is synergistic with the performance. My standards are likely to be higher than mosta theirs, so they may overrate me even.

"sad and lonely"
lonely is a pretty good deal, you aren't having to fulfill others' expectations, which may not be that reasonable & your time is your own.
it doesn't equate to sad for me, I remember well when it did at 16.

As I read it, the goalpost was 'what people think about your music'. Which people? All people? This as primary doesn't seem like great mental hygiene to me. When I go out in public, I intend to more or less look good for several reasons, one is people treat good looking people better. If they're checking out my pores or for flaws I'm not going to shrink or implode tho

well, david bowie is dead and so if i ever make music that i deem "really good", it would have been nice if my music idols deem it "really good" too.

heck, they don't even have to be music heroes, it's nice to be appreciated by anyone. it's a bonus. but if one's creations makes others vomit then those others can simply refrain from hearing those creations and stop further vomitations?

do I care what people think? It really depends right? First if it's online cut the care factor by several 100%. I find that many people will say things online they would never say in person. Online is the most difficult place to get beyond a first impression, but ironically it is likely the worst place to form judgement based on first impressions. Also the subject, in this case I assume one's own music.

When I post my music (which is very rare because I feel as if I dont have time to give to listen to everyone else, so it isnt right), I already have concerns in mind, thats what I am looking for, I dont ignore other things because people may note something I did not. Then it also depends on the tone of the one giving the criticism, I took enough aggressive criticism from Nam Vet Drill Sgts.

I do care what people think, sometimes though people dont go with what they think but what they are feeling and the latter is far more biased imo. I also learned that while we will debate the criticism we get from others in our mind (or in person or even on a forum) we fail to debate the self criticism we give our selves (in life in general, not just music/arts). In fact when I have a punch list of concerns that is exactly what I am doing, seeking validation or discrediting that voice.
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

My mantra is basically do the best I can do, always try to improve, enjoy what I’m doing, and treat people the way I’d want them to treat me, and I’ll never have to worry about what people think of me.

If i enjoy it i will not care to know who/what make it.
But i must admit this way of thinking lead me to be a lonely person. i use to dont look / care of things i dislike.this is choice to make.care about the other and you will be like everybody , dont paid attention and you will be alone.sometime it s hard , but 80% of the time i am in peace with myself and with the choice i have made.
