WTF Thermal paste missing

So yesterday, I reseated the CPU and used new thermal paste. I wasn't happy with the temps I was getting.
I had used Arctic MX 5 when I built the PC, but changed to Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.
When I took the cooling unit off the CPU there was no paste in the middle of the CPU... I had used the X method to apply paste , one i've always used tbh, never had a problem, but there was literally hardly any at all on the block or CPU.
Was the strangest thing, i've not seen that before.
I re-applied the new stuff using the 5 dot method and i've gained 10 degrees back when loaded and 5 idling. This paste is way better, but i've never heard of paste disappearing before...

Most thermal pastes are a mixture of liquid and solid compounds, the liquid
evaporates leaving the solid stuff, modern carbon based pastes seem to last
longer, are not conductive, very efficient, but tend to be more viscous and
more difficult to apply to varying degrees.
There is also the pump out effect, viscous paste like the Thermalright TFX are
very viscous/thick and will minimize the pump out, but the TFX is harder to apply.
The TFX is especially good for notebook and GPU if proper applied.

Very important is how the cooler/CPU geometry fits together, some CPUs are a
bit convex and others concave, some coolers are flat and others a little convex.
I wish everything was flat!
Tired of pastes pumping out?

For anyone interested into a thermal paste, a very good option is the SYY-157.
it is durable, not expensive, high performance and easier to apply than the TFX.

The alternatives are Alseye T9+ Platinum, Zezzio GT-GX, Maxtor CTG9, FuzeIce Plus
and even the Thermalright TFX.

How to deal with viscous paste, best use a hot air(hair dryer) over the paste
tube/heatsink/cpu or leave the paste tube in hot water for some minutes.

It was literally missing in the middle of the CPU and was still around the edges , like a 5p piece size was missing, or too thin to see.
I reapplied Kryonaut and gained a shit ton of temperature back, so something went wrong with the MX 5

The CPU or the cooler or both are convex.
The MX-4 is know to last long time, the 5 probably too, but there is
a lot of fake MX-4 and Kryonaut, maybe MX-5 too...
Kryonaut is top, but not know to last much time and not good against
pump out effect, if the Kryonaut fails too, try the Thermalright TFX.
Here I lap the cooler plate/foot to make it flatter

I doubt it was fake from a reputable company like Scan where I bought it. I just guess it was a freak thing, but the kryonaut is proving worth its weight in gold.Pictus wrote: ↑Mon Jan 17, 2022 10:35 pm The CPU or the cooler or both are convex.

Ryzen 9 idling sub 40 degrees , 60 under full load. That's perfect.

I remember when I first cleaned my dell laptop and did not know what the white thing was, later had to go to the repair shop to buy some I did it after 3 years of use maybe but there was still plenty of paste.
