As I understand it is played only with harmonics and then amplified. She uses a wooden pick against the heel of her hand

BTW the instrument is called "Đàn bầu" and not Ban Dao
I happen to own one, it is a quite amazing piece of art and it has such a wonderfull sound.
I always found the wood pitch bender so ingenious.
It leads the principle of a monochord to beautifull and undreamed results.
Here ist a version of Ru Con (a well known lullaby) which is often played on a Đàn bầu

An original instrument is just made of wood and a metal string and no electricity is involved.
But indeed a Đàn bầu will often be equipped with a pickup in order to be better heard when played together with an orchestra.

Not sure how you mean this but I don't think this description applies.Tj Shredder wrote:Its an electric instrument with a sustainer…

Well, at the end she had a sustain lasting very long without triggering a new note… Strings tend to die out unless there is a sustainer…teacue wrote: ↑Fri Jan 28, 2022 8:23 amNot sure how you mean this but I don't think this description applies.Tj Shredder wrote:Its an electric instrument with a sustainer…

You would be astonished to hear how long the natural sustain of a tone is on a Dan Bau
BTW only overtones are played.
But of course as soon as you have a pickup, nothing prevents you to use any additional effect.

Bolder sound did a Đàn bầu sample library for Kontakt:ReverendLove wrote:I wonder if there is a virtual version of this wonderful instrument.

In the middle of the eighties a vietnamese musicians group came to Cologne and gave concerts at WDR.
I had the luck to be in contact with some of the musicians.
One of them even made some hardware tunings to my vietnamese Mondgitarre
They were very talented and of course one of the member of the group played a Đàn bầu.
