Live 11.1 Apple M1 (Rosetta or not ?)

Hi,
I'm just curious to know if Apple M1 owners uses Live 11.1 with Rosetta or not. Is there a significant gain in performance ?
For now I have almost only used it with Rosetta because of plugin compatibility... I was wondering if it worth the migration...
thanx

I've never used Live in Rosetta mode, I kinda don't get the point, there's one deprecated plug in, MachFive 3, that has libraries attached to it in UVI's format, so they open up in Falcon and the UVI Workstation, but only if your DAW is also in Rosetta. It's an iLok issue but it's the only seeming advantage.
There's a short list of plug ins that cannot run in Rosetta as AU if Live is in Native M1 mode, but that's about it. I haven't bothered to check CPU Live in Native VS Rosetta, you could do that and find out. No doubt Rosetta will probably drop 5-10% off your CPU.

Audio Unit are not cross-platform unfortunately and I'm at a point where I'll have to re-think my setup before migrating to AU.machinesworking wrote: Mon Jan 31, 2022 1:50 am I've never used Live in Rosetta mode, I kinda don't get the point...
I thought I could benefit from community's experiences since I don't have any big project I can open in "non-Rosetta" mode.
But yeah ....I just drop a Serum instance with 16 voices on each osc with a 5 notes chord looping and I got 23 instances with native vs 13 with Rosetta before having some crackling...

IMO cross platform is a nice dream, but most plug ins at this point have their own plug in format, so porting between plug in formats, is easier. The main thing is, why do you want cross platform? I wanted it for a long time and I never use it, I have no Windows machine I need it for and noJolaff wrote: Mon Jan 31, 2022 4:24 amAudio Unit are not cross-platform unfortunately and I'm at a point where I'll have to re-think my setup before migrating to AU.machinesworking wrote: Mon Jan 31, 2022 1:50 am I've never used Live in Rosetta mode, I kinda don't get the point...
I'm in the process of switching from VST2 (an in the future, dead format) to AU and the occasional VST3 on the M1 mac here. The reasons are many, but mostly because AU isn't going anywhere and VST is in a state of flux. It's entirely possible some developers drop VST in favor of CLAP and AU, leaving VST as a wrapper format.
IMO keeping to one plug in format isn't a logical thing to do if you have the choice not to, especially if the other format is more stable etc.

I'm running Live in Rosetta just because I assumed I'd have problems otherwise, esp with things like Kontakt. Have only been on M1 for a couple of weeks so I've been taking the cautious path.
Nice to know I may be over-cautious - will try running in native later this evening.

Apparently, non-native plugins perform better when the host is running with Rosetta, as opposed to running natively and using Apple‘s AU hosting compability service to translate non-native AUs. So, if you’re using lots of non-native plugins, you might be better off with Rosetta. I haven’t tested it myself, though.
It’s probably better to ask that question on Centercode, though.

I wasn't sure if I should ask here or on Centercode hehe .... but of what I can see it seams to have quite a gap in performances... at least with native M1 plugins..nanostream wrote: Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:18 pm Apparently, non-native plugins perform better when the host is running with Rosetta, as opposed to running natively and using Apple‘s AU hosting compability service to translate non-native AUs. I didn't notice a huge difference. I think CPU usage on the song I tested dropped from around 35% to perhaps 26%. All Ableton plug-ins. A little disappointing to be honest. That said, the M1 performance overall is good. Not breathtakingly faster than my older i7-6770, but certainly a lot less power draw and heat. No fan spin-up which is very nice.

How do I know if Ableton 11.1 is running in Rosetta or native on my MacBook M1 Pro? Also how do I change from one to the other?benzene wrote: Mon Jan 31, 2022 1:37 pm I'm running Live in Rosetta just because I assumed I'd have problems otherwise, esp with things like Kontakt. you choose get info from the menu (click with 2 fingers if you're using the trackpad) and choose the open with rosetta option. no other way that I'm aware of.

I don't believe the CPU level in Live under M1 at all. Always seems to level out at about 30 regardless of how many instances for some VST that made my previous MBP sound like an aircraft taking off and peaked the CPU meter there. And some that seem to dip below some of the allegedly 'heavier' CPUs, like Waves' new sampler, seem to make the whole thing heat up so it's all over the place really.jonljacobi wrote: Mon Jan 31, 2022 10:09 pm I didn't notice a huge difference.
