If you ever tried to contact Apple support… My experience with too big companies, they don’t listen to bug reports, unless another big company does. (They always assume user error, which might be statistically correct)
Its up to Steinberg to contact Apple about the issue, and they could communicate the state of affairs…
If it does not work as advertised they have to refund. And their authorization system would easily allow to take a license back…
On the other hand, always demo before purchase, especially on M1 or new OS versions… You could have known before…

That's exactly my thought.

Anyway... I got it to work. Had to buy 'CleanMyMac X' (70€) in order to flush several caches and rogue settings. After a restart had to re-authorize a few plugins but Backbone is finally responding to MIDI notes being played. (Yes, I managed to make it appear in the plugin list, but it would not make any sound)

What an absolute clusterf*ck

And best of all is that after 3 weeks I still got no response from Steinberg. Not even an automated one alá "we're sorry to hear, we are working to make it the best product, blabla..."

Doesn't matter now.

"CleanMyMac X" solved it?
So then, it was an Apple issue.

It solved the issue of it not appearing in the plugin list.

That it didn't react to MIDI was due to it not understanding MIDI 2.0
After turning it off in the MIDI settings panel it started reacting to my keyboard.
I have dozens of plugins that don't have this problem, so it must be a bug in Backbone. Reason and Renoise don't have an option for MIDI 2.0 that's why it worked there.

Funny thing is, that after all I wrote about Steinberg leaving a paying customer hanging without a working product, everything you read was:

Any reason why you didn't try the demo before buying it?
Always a good practice (though I do have a few developers that I would buy before demoing first (Spectrasonics, u-he, fuse audio, softube, synapse, tal-audio that I trust enough that it will either work or they will fix it if it doesn't)).

Because I was stupid? I liked the videos showcasing what it can do, saw there was a sale, checked the compatibility list and went for it.

Ahhh....as a GAS member I understand, but yeah I try to demo as much as the GAS will allow me to before I buy..

Well, fellow GAS member, will do from now on. :) My excuse is that I never had any issue with any plugin I bought before. Since it's Steinberg I assumed it would be smooth sailing.

And nothing will convince you otherwise, even though it's obvious by deductive reasoning. Adding that last piece of information didn't help your case either, since many products do not yet respond to MIDI 2.0... And it's up to each company how they implement MIDI 1 or 2.

Did you read the MIDI specs before you bought it? (I probably wouldn't have either.) Just saying, it's not Steinberg's fault. Seems your issue really was Apple and perhaps your own expectations that the whole world has fully implemented the MIDI 2 spec.

Maybe you're in the wrong thread...

Mine. Yes. There is something wrong in Backbones VST3 to AU wrapper. (it uses a wrapper because it says so in the About page)

I couldn't care less for MIDI 2.0. I just had it on because it never was an issue. I actually wasn't even aware it was on before this whole episode. (MIDI 2 is backwards compatible) Everything works with it left on but Backbone. I don't have anything that really supports it, so turning it off doesn't affect me the least.
I'm turning it off specifically just for Backbone to work.

Your attempt at trying to read things into the things I wrote failed miserably. Sorry for that.

Funny.
Is AmigaOS listed as being compatible?

It's still about Backbone now, isn't it? Are you trying to shush me out of a thread about Backbone while talking about Backbone?

Anyway: now that I got it to work, I can say that it's pretty nice. A bit CPU heavy for what it does(*), but nice nonetheless :)

(*) I have no problem dragging rendered results out of it into several pads in Drum Machine Designer. It's a nifty feature.

Steinberg Support still sucks balls, though. A month passed and nobody seems to care. I've added that the request for a refund can be cancelled but I don't really think anybody will ever answer to it  GREAT!
