Is talent born or created with hard work and practice

I don't know why but all this "I think talent is......" crap is messing with my mind. You don't have to hypothesise. Just look it up.It has a definition.
Or should we have a thread "What is a cat?". Well I think that cats are actually born as a blank animal and it is only their practice at watching other animals that determine what they will become. If you see a cat it has been brought up around other cats. But if you see a zebra then it could be a cat that was introduced into a zebra herd early in life.

So are you saying that there are some things where you are born with the talent or not and other things where talent is a myth? A bit convenient, don't you think?Spring Goose wrote: Wed Feb 09, 2022 4:50 pmThat's in the context of the army which is life or death, and it's a very short life at that!
I was a completely average kid but I bet I'm funnier than you. I got my humour from my Mum and Dad - Mum's quick wit and Dad's twisted sense of humour. It's in my genes and if you're funny, it's in your genes, too.For instance, I’ve always been considered to be pretty funny. Would I have found my comedic sense if I wasn’t a short, chubby, big nosed kid? Probably not.
That's a very narrow view and it is totally subjective. OTOH, Clem Burke, Blondie's drummer, is objectively an incredibly talented drummer. You only have to go to a Blondie gig to appreciate that, no matter what you think of Blondie or the style of music they play. And to me, that's what talent is - undeniable. It's that "you know it when you see it" kind of thing.Bulbizarre wrote: Wed Feb 09, 2022 6:37 pmHow I see "talent" is just the approach you have to music, how you percieve the world or things and how you would like the sounds to turn out.

You are living in Britian but resistant to its cultural influence on your ways of living and thinking? I am not a born Dane, though I am born in Denmark. A Dane is something you become. And becoming a Dane is also becoming a Swede or Norwigian. Our history and culture are too entangled for the differences to make a difference. Nurture, not nature

No i'm saying your example of natural leadership in the context of army/war in this short life doesn't prove people have natural talent at music.BONES wrote: Thu Feb 10, 2022 5:13 amSo are you saying that there are some things where you are born with the talent or not and other things where talent is a myth? Soccer has its own problems. The top-earning DJs are not so different from the soccer stars. I don't see why a gig of one night is worth a whole modal year salary.

When people ask me if I’m good at guitar, I used to say, “I’m John Lennon good.”pekbro wrote: Wed Feb 09, 2022 10:26 pm No doubt there are many variables involved that we have no control over. I have one friend who's a multi-millionaire rockstar guitarist. I have another friend who's a world-famous guitarist in his own right, written up in guitar player and whatnot. Tom (Conway), is very likely a better guitarist than the rockstar, but he still needs to work at the local music shop to make ends meet. Tom went the art/edu route pursuing traditional playing styles and stuff, the other guy simply was lucky enough to be in a band that got super famous. In the end it's pointless to worry about it, just pursue what makes you happy, and what you can manage, that's all we can do.

So you are saying that some talents are innate, others are not. As I said, a bit convenient. If there is no such thing as innate musical talent, why aren't we all better than Mozart was at a similar age? And in case you aren't aware of Mozart's prodigious talent, this is from Encyclopedia Brittanica - "Mozart was a child prodigy. His father—a talented violinist—taught him basic notes on the harpsichord. Mozart composed his first piece of music in 1761, at age five; by age six, he had performed before two imperial courts."Spring Goose wrote: Thu Feb 10, 2022 7:56 amNo i'm saying your example of natural leadership in the context of army/war in this short life doesn't prove people have natural talent at music.
Yeah, as I've gotten older I have taken the view that elite sportsman give up the best years of their lives, mostly without even realising it. Sure, the real elites earn stupid money but a lot of players earn an average sort of living and have to give up so much of the best years of their lives. You'd have to really love your sport to that, I reckon.BertKoor wrote: Thu Feb 10, 2022 8:54 amSoccer has its own problems. That's all about their ability to pull a crowd and generate income for their employers. If you pay someone $50,000 to appear and it draws in an extra 1,000 people at $100 a ticket, then that DJ has just made you $50,000. So paying him $50k is an absolute bargain. The top-earning DJs are not so different from the soccer stars. I don't see why a gig of one night is worth a whole modal year salary.

Talent starts when you are born, and useless if you don't practice. Dignity comes from within. WHO? ARE? YOU?

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
