So there are a lot of tape and tube emulators out there, I've tried a couple and I'm looking for people who have tried most of them.

I'm going for that distorted vocal garage rock sound and I started out by trying AudioThing's "Reels" and Waves Factory's "Cassette". Both of them give me that sound really (Reels being a little better at it). But this is just 2 plugins out of the many plugins. I usually use Softube's "Tape" for printing so to speak as driving it didn't really seem to give me what I'm looking for. Also tried out "Speakers" by AudioThing, kinda got me in the ballpark too. Tried Soundtoys' "Decapitator" and it was ok, played around with the demo and couldn't quite get where I wanted.

Anyone else use any tape or tube plugins for extreme coloration/distortion like this? Which one (aside from UAD or Slate...I just can't do required hardware or dongles) is really good at giving an authentic response to being fed a really hot/high input.

Tried to think of something for ference but maybe think of I Hate Jazz or Nonagon Infinity....like the whole albums.

Is there anything better than what I tried or am I pretty much using the "greatest hits" here?

You should demo Tupe by Goodherz, it’s very good.

If you have Reaktor, try this. It can distort like hell :)

If you want a tape plugin that distorts to buggery use Waves J37.

Push that hard and it just craps out and distorts like fk. Which is kinda cool if that's what you are looking for.
Don't trust those with words of weakness, they are the most aggressive

Maybe TB Reelbus?

Voxengo TubeAmp (free)
Fuse Audio VPRE-2C

they should do the job!

If they are too soft for your taste, you could also use FreeClip and add an EQ pre and post. Than you can emphasize and de-emphasize the frequencies with most and least saturation.

A couple of my favourite vocal compressors also add a good dollop of saturation: MJUC and Fuse VCL-373

Nobody has mentioned Freakshow Industries Mishby "Tape Abomination" here yet. Might be a bit much, but worth checking out for extreme coloration.

god i wish pre/de-emphasis was standard on all saturation plugins.
It's one of the reasons why I use kelvin - so much -.
Softube Overstayer also has it.

My new favorite plugin company, they definitely got the marketing down. The plugin itself is definitely a little much for me but respect to these guys' design.
